Generosity is the adornment of a human being.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Generosity is the adornment of a human being.

This enlightening Hadith highlights the importance and beauty of generosity in the character of a person. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word "sakhā" in Arabic, translated as "generosity," encompasses the act of giving freely and abundantly, without expecting anything in return. It is an attribute that reflects the noble qualities of kindness, selflessness, and compassion. Generosity is not limited to material possessions; it extends to sharing one's time, knowledge, and resources for the betterment of others.

The Hadith emphasizes that generosity is not only a virtuous act but also an adornment for a human being. Just as adornments enhance the beauty of a person, generosity enhances the beauty of one's character and elevates their status in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a quality that distinguishes believers and sets them apart as embodiments of goodness and benevolence.

The Quran provides numerous verses that reinforce the significance of generosity. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 63:10)

And spend of what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous.'

This verse highlights the urgency of giving in this worldly life, as one cannot delay acts of generosity until it is too late.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the righteous believers by saying, (Quran 76:8-9)

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse exemplifies the selflessness and sincerity behind acts of generosity, as believers give solely for the sake of pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His pleasure.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages Muslims to cultivate the virtue of generosity in their lives. By being generous, we not only fulfill our duty towards those in need but also purify our souls and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Generosity has far-reaching consequences, both in this world and the Hereafter.

When we are generous, we inspire others to follow suit, creating a ripple effect of goodness in society. Our acts of generosity can bring joy and relief to those who are suffering, fostering a sense of unity and compassion among Muslims. Moreover, generosity is a means of seeking forgiveness and expiating sins. The Prophet Muhammad () said, (Sunan Ibn Majah)

Charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the immense value of generosity in Islam. It is not merely an act of giving but a way of adorning our character and embodying the teachings of the Quran. Let us strive to be generous in all aspects of our lives, knowing that our generosity is a means of attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beautifying our souls. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be truly generous and may He accept our acts of generosity.
