قاتِلْ هَواكَ بِعِلْمِكَ، وغَضَبَكَ بِحِلْمِكَ۔
Combat your vain desire with your knowledge and your anger with your forbearance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Combat your vain desire with your knowledge and your anger with your forbearance.
This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of using knowledge and forbearance to control our desires and manage our anger. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (Qatil) "قاتِلْ" means to combat or fight against. It implies a struggle and effort to overcome something. In this context, it refers to the internal battle against our vain desires and anger. The word (Hawak) "هَواكَ" refers to vain desires or whimsical inclinations. These desires are often driven by our lower selves and can lead us astray from the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to combat these vain desires with (Ilmik) "عِلْمِكَ", which means knowledge. Knowledge here refers to religious knowledge, understanding the teachings of Islam, and gaining wisdom from the Quran and the traditions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt. By acquiring knowledge, we equip ourselves with the tools to recognize and resist the temptations of our vain desires.
The second part of the Hadith states, (Wa ghadabaka bihilmik) "وَغَضَبَكَ بِحِلْمِكَ", which means to control your anger with forbearance. (Ghadabak) "غَضَبَكَ" refers to anger or rage. Anger is a natural emotion, but it can lead to destructive behavior if not managed properly. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to respond to anger with (Hilmik) "حِلْمِكَ", which means forbearance or patience.
Forbearance is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of provocation. It allows us to control our anger and respond to challenging situations with wisdom and restraint. By practicing forbearance, we can prevent conflicts, maintain harmonious relationships, and promote peace within ourselves and society.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.
This verse emphasizes the importance of knowledge (understanding) and piety in our journey through life. By acquiring knowledge and practicing piety, we can combat our vain desires and make informed decisions that align with the teachings of Islam.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of controlling our anger. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the virtues of those who control their anger and forgive others. It reminds us that forbearance is a quality beloved by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is rewarded in this life and the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to reflect on the consequences of our actions. By combatting our vain desires with knowledge, we can make informed choices that align with our faith and lead to personal growth. Similarly, by controlling our anger with forbearance, we can avoid conflicts and maintain harmonious relationships.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to combat their vain desires with knowledge and control their anger with forbearance. By seeking knowledge and practicing patience, we can navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the guidance of the Quran.
