(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Remembering [Allah] is the light of intellect, the life of the souls, and the polishing of the hearts.

This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the significance and transformative power of remembrance of Allah in the lives of Muslims.

Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (dhikr) "ذِكْرُ" refers to the act of remembering or mentioning Allah. It encompasses various forms of remembrance, such as reciting His names and attributes, reciting the Quran, and engaging in supplication and prayer. (nur) "نُورُ" means light, which symbolizes guidance, enlightenment, and clarity. (aql) "عَقْلِ" refers to intellect or rationality, representing the faculty of understanding and discernment. (hayat) "حَيَاةُ" means life, signifying vitality, spiritual awakening, and the sustenance of the soul. (nufus) "نُفُوسِ" refers to souls, encompassing the essence of human beings and their innermost selves. (jala) "جَلَاءُ" means polishing or purification, indicating the removal of impurities and the refinement of the hearts.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:24),

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.

This verse highlights the importance of responding to the call of Allah and His Messenger, which brings spiritual life to the believers.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:152), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.

This verse emphasizes the reciprocal nature of remembrance, where Allah promises to remember those who remember Him. It also highlights the connection between remembrance and gratitude, as gratitude is an essential aspect of remembering Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that remembrance of Allah serves as a source of guidance and enlightenment for the intellect. When we engage in the remembrance of Allah, our minds are illuminated with divine wisdom and understanding. It enables us to make sound judgments, differentiate between right and wrong, and navigate through the complexities of life. The remembrance of Allah sharpens our intellect and enables us to perceive the truth with clarity.

Moreover, the Hadith highlights that remembrance of Allah is the life force for our souls. Just as physical sustenance nourishes our bodies, the remembrance of Allah nourishes our souls. It revitalizes our spiritual being, rejuvenates our hearts, and fills us with a sense of purpose and meaning. Through remembrance, our souls are awakened from the slumber of heedlessness and are infused with spiritual energy.

Additionally, the Hadith emphasizes that remembrance of Allah polishes and purifies our hearts. Our hearts are prone to being tarnished by sins, negative emotions, and worldly distractions. However, through consistent remembrance, our hearts are cleansed, and the rust of impurities is removed. This polishing process allows our hearts to become receptive to divine guidance, love, and compassion. It enables us to develop a deep connection with Allah and to manifest His attributes in our interactions with others.

The consequences of neglecting the remembrance of Allah are evident in the Quran. In Surah Al-Ra'd (13:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.

This verse highlights that the remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and assurance to the hearts of believers. Conversely, when we neglect the remembrance of Allah, our hearts become restless, and we experience a sense of emptiness and dissatisfaction.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the profound impact of remembrance of Allah in our lives. It serves as a guiding light for our intellect, a life-giving force for our souls, and a means of purifying our hearts. Through remembrance, we attain clarity, spiritual vitality, and a deep connection with Allah. Let us strive to make remembrance of Allah an integral part of our lives, for it is through this remembrance that we find true enlightenment, inner peace, and spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember Him abundantly and benefit from the transformative power of His remembrance.
