Equity is a trait of the honourable ones.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Equity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإنصاف شيمة الأشراف" which translates to

Equity is a trait of the honourable ones.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (al-insaf) "الإنصاف" means equity or justice. It refers to the act of being fair and just in all matters, treating others with equality and impartiality. This concept is deeply rooted in the teachings of Islam and is emphasized throughout the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

Furthermore, the word (shimah) "شيمة" means a trait or characteristic. It signifies that equity is not merely an action but a defining quality of the noble and honorable individuals. It is a virtue that distinguishes them from others, reflecting their high moral standards and adherence to the principles of justice.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of equity and justice. In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse highlights the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It emphasizes the need to be fair and impartial, regardless of social status or personal biases. This aligns perfectly with the statement of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) that equity is a trait of the honorable ones.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam. He was a paragon of justice and equity, as demonstrated throughout his life. One of the most famous incidents that exemplifies his commitment to justice is the case of the dispute over a shield during his caliphate. When both parties claimed ownership, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) decided to give the shield to the other person, despite being the rightful owner. This act showcased his unwavering commitment to justice, even if it meant sacrificing his own rights.

The trait of equity has far-reaching consequences in society. When individuals embody this quality, it leads to a harmonious and just society. It promotes unity, fairness, and equality among people, regardless of their differences. Equity ensures that everyone is treated with dignity and respect, and that their rights are protected. It fosters a sense of trust and cooperation among individuals, creating an environment conducive to peace and prosperity.

As Muslims, we are called upon to emulate the noble qualities of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive for equity in all aspects of our lives. We should seek justice in our interactions with others, whether it be in our families, workplaces, or communities. By upholding equity, we contribute to the betterment of society and fulfill our duty as believers.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that equity is a trait of the honorable ones. It emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness in all matters, reflecting the teachings of the Quran. By embodying this quality, we contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to follow the path of equity and grant us the ability to act justly in all our affairs.
