مَنْ قَنِعَ غَنِيَ۔
One who is content becomes rich [and independent].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Contentment And The Contented)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ قَنِعَ غَنِيَ۔" This can be translated as,
One who is content becomes rich [and independent].
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The word (qani'a) "قَنِعَ" is derived from the root word (qana'a) "قَنَعَ", which means to be content, satisfied, or to have sufficiency. It refers to a state of being internally fulfilled and not desiring more than what is necessary. It is a quality that allows one to find contentment and peace within themselves, regardless of their external circumstances.
The word (ghaniya) "غَنِيَ" means rich or independent. It signifies a state of abundance and self-sufficiency, where one is not reliant on others for their needs. It is important to note that this richness is not merely limited to material wealth, but encompasses spiritual, emotional, and intellectual richness as well.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah At-Talaq, verse 3:
And He will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
This verse emphasizes the concept of tawakkul, which is complete reliance and trust in Allah. When one is content with what Allah has provided, they place their trust in Him and rely on His provisions. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, promises to provide for them from unexpected sources and grant them sufficiency.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80:
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking sustenance from Allah and asking Him for the strength to face life's challenges. When one is content with what they have, they are able to navigate through life with a firm and steady approach, knowing that Allah's sustaining power is with them.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
One who is content becomes rich [and independent],
teaches us a profound lesson. It reminds us that true richness lies in contentment and satisfaction with what Allah has bestowed upon us. When we are content, we are able to find peace and fulfillment within ourselves, regardless of our external circumstances.
This contentment leads to a sense of self-sufficiency and independence, as we are no longer dependent on material possessions or the validation of others for our happiness. We become rich in our hearts, minds, and souls, as we develop a deep connection with Allah and find solace in His provisions.
Furthermore, this Hadith encourages us to adopt a mindset of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings we have been given. When we are content, we are able to recognize and value the abundance that surrounds us, whether it be in the form of relationships, knowledge, or material possessions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
One who is content becomes rich [and independent],
teaches us the importance of finding contentment within ourselves and relying on Allah for our sustenance. It reminds us that true richness lies in the richness of the heart, mind, and soul, rather than in material possessions. May we all strive to cultivate contentment in our lives and seek true richness through our connection with Allah.
