(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لَنْ يُثْمِرَ الْعِلْمُ حَتّى يُقارِنَهُ الحِلْمُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of combining knowledge with forbearance in order for it to bear fruit. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" in this Hadith refers to the understanding and awareness of religious teachings, principles, and wisdom. It encompasses both theoretical knowledge and practical application. Knowledge is a powerful tool that can guide individuals towards righteousness and enable them to make informed decisions.

On the other hand, the word (forbearance) "حِلْمُ" refers to patience, self-control, and the ability to restrain oneself from reacting impulsively or harshly in challenging situations. It is the quality of remaining calm and composed, even in the face of adversity or provocation. Forbearance is a virtue that allows individuals to maintain their dignity and handle difficult circumstances with wisdom and grace.

The Quran provides numerous verses that highlight the significance of knowledge and forbearance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 50:16)

And We have certainly created man and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.

This verse emphasizes Allah's knowledge of the innermost thoughts and desires of human beings. It reminds us that true knowledge is not limited to external information but also encompasses self-awareness and understanding of our own weaknesses and inclinations.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:133-134)

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous. Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

These verses highlight the importance of forbearance, patience, and forgiveness. They emphasize that true righteousness is not only demonstrated through acts of worship but also through the ability to control one's emotions and respond to others with kindness and compassion.

Now, let us reflect on the impactful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. Knowledge alone is not enough to bring about positive change in individuals or society. It must be accompanied by forbearance, as the two qualities complement and reinforce each other. Without forbearance, knowledge can become a source of arrogance, pride, and intolerance. It may lead individuals to belittle others, dismiss differing opinions, and engage in harmful behavior.

On the other hand, when knowledge is coupled with forbearance, it becomes a powerful force for good. Forbearance allows individuals to apply their knowledge in a compassionate and understanding manner. It enables them to navigate complex situations with wisdom and empathy. Knowledge, when tempered with forbearance, becomes a means of promoting harmony, resolving conflicts, and fostering unity among people.

For example, a person who possesses knowledge about the teachings of Islam may be aware of the importance of justice. However, without forbearance, they may become impatient and aggressive when dealing with those who do not adhere to the same principles. But when knowledge is accompanied by forbearance, they will approach such situations with patience, understanding, and a desire to educate and guide others towards the path of righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that knowledge alone is not sufficient for personal and societal growth. It must be accompanied by forbearance, which allows individuals to apply their knowledge with wisdom, patience, and compassion. By combining these two qualities, we can cultivate a balanced and enlightened approach to life, one that promotes understanding, tolerance, and the betterment of ourselves and our communities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and forbearance to seek knowledge and utilize it for the betterment of humanity.
