The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "Al-Hilmu zīnul khulq," which translates to

Forbearance is the ornament of [one’s] character.

This beautiful Hadith emphasizes the importance of patience, tolerance, and self-control in shaping one's character.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. "Al-Hilmu" refers to forbearance, which encompasses qualities such as patience, tolerance, and restraint. It is the ability to remain calm and composed in the face of adversity, to control one's anger and impulses, and to respond to challenging situations with wisdom and grace. "Zīnul khulq" means the ornament or adornment of one's character, highlighting that forbearance beautifies and enhances the overall demeanor of an individual.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the significance of forbearance and its positive impact on our lives. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134),

Those who spend [in Allah's cause] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights the connection between forbearance and acts of charity, as well as the importance of controlling anger and forgiving others. It reminds us that Allah loves those who possess these qualities.

In Surah Al-Furqan (25:63), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the servants of the Most Merciful, stating,

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to ignorance and harshness with peace and tranquility, showcasing the virtue of forbearance in dealing with difficult individuals.
