Loyalty is the ornament of the intellect and the symbol of nobility.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Loyalty is the ornament of the intellect and the symbol of nobility.
This thought-provoking Hadith emphasizes the importance of loyalty and its impact on one's intellect and character. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (وَفَاءُ) "wafa" in Arabic, translated as "loyalty," encompasses the concepts of faithfulness, sincerity, and fulfilling one's obligations. It is a quality that reflects the integrity and steadfastness of an individual. Loyalty is not merely a superficial act, but rather a deep-rooted commitment that stems from the heart.
The Hadith describes loyalty as the (حِلْيَةُ العَقْلِ) "hilyatul 'aql", which can be translated as the
ornament of the intellect.
Just as an ornament enhances the beauty of a person, loyalty adorns and enhances the intellect. It is through loyalty that one's intellect is refined and elevated. A person who is loyal possesses a sound and discerning mind, as they prioritize truth, justice, and righteousness.
Furthermore, the Hadith describes loyalty as the (عُنْوَانُ النُّبْلِ) "unwanun-nubl", which can be translated as the "symbol of nobility." Loyalty is not only a virtue but also a distinguishing characteristic of noble individuals. It sets them apart from others and reflects their honorable nature. Loyalty is a mark of dignity and honor, as it demonstrates one's commitment to their principles, values, and relationships.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of loyalty and its impact on individuals and society. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 16:91)
And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allah, over you, a witness
This verse highlights the significance of fulfilling one's commitments and remaining loyal to the agreements made.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 5:1)
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling contracts and obligations, which is a manifestation of loyalty. It encourages Muslims to be trustworthy and true to their word, as this is a characteristic of noble individuals.
The consequences of loyalty are far-reaching. When individuals are loyal, they inspire trust and build strong relationships based on mutual respect and reliability. Loyalty fosters unity and cooperation within families, communities, and societies. It creates an environment of trust and stability, where people can rely on one another.
On the other hand, the absence of loyalty leads to discord, mistrust, and the breakdown of relationships. When individuals are disloyal, they betray the trust of others, causing harm and division. This not only damages personal relationships but also weakens the fabric of society as a whole.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize loyalty in their lives. By being loyal to Allah, His Messenger (ﷺ), the Ahl al-Bayt, and our fellow believers, we can adorn our intellects and embody the noble qualities that Islam promotes. Loyalty is not only an individual responsibility but also a collective duty that contributes to the well-being and prosperity of the Muslim Ummah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of loyalty as the ornament of the intellect and the symbol of nobility. It emphasizes the importance of remaining faithful, sincere, and committed in fulfilling our obligations and maintaining strong relationships. By embodying loyalty, we can elevate our intellects, inspire trust, and contribute to the unity and prosperity of the Muslim Ummah. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be loyal and steadfast in all aspects of our lives.
