لاتُواخِ مَنْ يَستُرُ مَناقِبَكَ ويَنْشُرُ مثالِبَكَ۔
Do not take as a brother one who hides your positive traits and exposes your shortcomings.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Brother, The Friend, The Associate And The Companion)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاتُواخِ مَنْ يَستُرُ مَناقِبَكَ ويَنْشُرُ مثالِبَكَ۔
This Hadith serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious in choosing their companions and friends. It advises against forming close relationships with individuals who conceal one's virtues and expose their flaws.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (manaqibak) "مَناقِبَكَ" refers to one's positive traits, virtues, and noble qualities. It encompasses all the praiseworthy attributes that a person possesses. On the other hand, (mathalibak) "مَثالِبَكَ" refers to one's shortcomings, faults, and weaknesses. It encompasses all the negative aspects that a person may have.
The essence of this Hadith can be found in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of choosing righteous companions and warns against befriending those who may lead us astray. In Surah Al-Kahf, verse 28, Allah says,
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.
This verse highlights the importance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who are devoted to Allah and constantly seek His pleasure.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan, verse 27, Allah describes the Day of Judgment when the disbelievers will regret their choice of companions. He says,
And [warn of] the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'
This verse serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of choosing companions who do not guide us towards the path of righteousness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges Muslims to be cautious in selecting their companions. It advises against forming close relationships with individuals who hide our positive traits and expose our shortcomings. Such individuals can be detrimental to our spiritual growth and can lead us away from the path of righteousness.
By surrounding ourselves with friends who appreciate and encourage our virtues, we are motivated to strive for excellence and become better individuals. These friends serve as a source of inspiration and support, reminding us of our potential and helping us overcome our weaknesses. On the other hand, companions who constantly highlight our flaws and undermine our strengths can have a negative impact on our self-esteem and hinder our personal growth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) profound advice in this Hadith encourages Muslims to seek companions who bring out the best in them and help them become closer to Allah. It reminds us to choose friends who sincerely care for our well-being and guide us towards righteousness. By doing so, we create an environment that fosters personal development, spiritual growth, and a stronger connection with Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious in choosing their companions. It advises against forming close relationships with individuals who conceal our virtues and expose our flaws. This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous companions. By selecting friends who appreciate and encourage our positive traits, we are motivated to strive for excellence and become better individuals. May Allah guide us in choosing companions who bring us closer to Him and help us attain His pleasure.
