مَنْ صَدَقَ يَقينُهُ لَمْ يَرْتَبْ۔
One whose certitude is true does not [have any] doubt.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Certitude)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ صَدَقَ يَقينُهُ لَمْ يَرْتَبْ۔
This can be translated as,
One whose certitude is true does not [have any] doubt.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sadaqa) "صَدَقَ" in this Hadith means to be truthful or sincere. It refers to the state of having a genuine and unwavering belief. The word (yaqinuhu) "يَقِينُهُ" means one's certainty or conviction. It signifies a deep-rooted faith that is free from any hesitation or uncertainty. Finally, the word (lam yartab) "لَمْ يَرْتَبْ" means to not have any doubt or wavering.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having true certitude in our beliefs. It teaches us that when our faith is based on sincere conviction and unwavering certainty, we will be free from doubts and uncertainties. Such a state of unwavering belief is a reflection of a strong and unshakable connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the message of this Hadith. For instance, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights the importance of having unwavering belief and sincerity in our faith. It emphasizes that true believers are those who do not doubt and are willing to sacrifice for the sake of Allah. Their certitude is rooted in their unshakable conviction and trust in Allah's guidance.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:260), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) recounts the story of Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). When Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) asked Allah to show him how He gives life to the dead, Allah commanded him to take four birds, cut them into pieces, and place a portion of each bird on different mountains. Then, Allah commanded Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) to call the birds, and they came flying to him, restored to life.
This miraculous event showcased the unwavering certitude and trust that Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) had in Allah's power. He did not doubt Allah's ability to bring the dead back to life. This story serves as a powerful example of the kind of unshakable faith and certitude that we should strive for in our own lives.
When we reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that true certitude is not merely a theoretical concept. It has practical implications in our daily lives. When we have unwavering belief and trust in Allah, it motivates us to act in accordance with our faith. We become steadfast in our worship, diligent in our obligations, and resilient in the face of challenges.
Furthermore, true certitude enables us to overcome doubts and uncertainties that may arise in our spiritual journey. It gives us the strength to resist the temptations of doubt and to seek knowledge and understanding to strengthen our faith. It allows us to navigate through the complexities of life with a sense of purpose and clarity.
Conversely, when our certitude is weak and wavering, doubts can easily creep into our hearts and minds. These doubts can lead to confusion, indecisiveness, and a lack of conviction in our faith. They can hinder our spiritual growth and prevent us from fully experiencing the peace and tranquility that comes with true certitude.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of having true certitude in our beliefs. It reminds us that when our faith is based on sincere conviction and unwavering certainty, we will be free from doubts and uncertainties. This Hadith is a call to strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to strive for a deep-rooted faith that guides our actions and protects us from the pitfalls of doubt. May Allah grant us the ability to attain true certitude in our beliefs and to live a life of unwavering faith.
