اَلْحَياءُ خُلْقٌ مَرْضِيٌّ۔
Modesty is a pleasing characteristic.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Modesty is a pleasing characteristic.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of modesty in a person's character and behavior. The word used for modesty in Arabic is (الحياء) "al-haya", which refers to a sense of shame or bashfulness. It is a quality that prevents one from engaging in inappropriate or indecent actions.
The concept of modesty is not only praised in this Hadith but is also highly regarded in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26),
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.
This verse highlights the importance of modesty in clothing, which is a reflection of one's inner character. Modesty in dressing is a means of preserving one's dignity and protecting oneself from immoral behavior.
Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the significance of modesty in interactions between men and women. In Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs both men and women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. This verse encourages individuals to exercise self-restraint and avoid engaging in actions that may lead to immodesty or indecency. Modesty in behavior and interactions is a means of maintaining purity and upholding the sanctity of relationships.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the pleasing nature of modesty in this Hadith. Modesty is not only a commendable quality in the eyes of Allah, but it also earns the respect and admiration of others. When a person displays modesty in their words, actions, and appearance, they exude a sense of humility and sincerity. This, in turn, attracts the hearts of people towards them and creates a positive influence on society.
Modesty is not limited to external appearances but extends to one's inner self as well. It encompasses humility, self-awareness, and a sense of accountability before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). A modest person recognizes their weaknesses and strives to improve themselves, seeking guidance and forgiveness from Allah. They are not boastful or arrogant but rather acknowledge their limitations and rely on the mercy and guidance of Allah.
The practice of modesty has far-reaching consequences in an individual's life. It cultivates a sense of self-discipline, self-respect, and self-control. Modesty helps to protect one's honor, preserve their dignity, and maintain a pure heart. It also fosters healthy and respectful relationships, as modesty encourages individuals to treat others with kindness, respect, and empathy.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of cultivating modesty in our lives. We should strive to be modest in our appearance, behavior, and interactions, seeking to please Allah and earn the respect of others. Modesty is not a sign of weakness but rather a reflection of strength and integrity. By embodying this noble characteristic, we can contribute to a more harmonious and virtuous society.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the quality of modesty and may it be a source of blessings and success in this world and the Hereafter.
