اَلطَّمَعُ مُذِلٌّ، اَلوَرَعُ مُجِلٌّ۔
Covetousness humiliates while piety exalts.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Covetousness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الطمع مذل، الورع مجل
which translates to
Covetousness humiliates while piety exalts.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims, regardless of their sect.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (At-Tama') "الطمع" refers to an excessive desire for worldly possessions, wealth, or power. It is a state of greed and avarice that leads one to constantly crave more, without considering the consequences or the rights of others. On the other hand, (Al-Wara') "الورع" signifies piety, righteousness, and the fear of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a state of being cautious and mindful of one's actions, striving to adhere to the teachings of Islam and avoiding anything that may displease Allah.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all aspects of our lives. It reminds us that true success lies in relying on Allah's blessings rather than relying on our own desires and ambitions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr (59:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given (from the booty of Bani An-Nadir), and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful.
This verse highlights the virtue of selflessness and generosity, which are the antithesis of covetousness. It teaches us that true success lies in prioritizing the well-being of others over our own desires and possessions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the destructive nature of covetousness and the uplifting nature of piety. Covetousness leads to humiliation, as it blinds individuals to the true purpose of life and causes them to prioritize worldly gains over spiritual growth and moral values. It leads to a constant state of dissatisfaction and discontentment, as one is never satisfied with what they have and always yearns for more.
On the other hand, piety exalts a person. It elevates their character, purifies their intentions, and strengthens their relationship with Allah. Piety instills contentment and gratitude, as individuals recognize that true wealth lies in the blessings bestowed upon them by Allah, rather than in material possessions. It leads to a sense of inner peace and tranquility, as one's actions are guided by the fear of Allah and the desire to please Him.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of cultivating piety in our lives. We should strive to purify our hearts from the disease of covetousness and instead focus on developing a strong connection with Allah. By doing so, we can attain true success and fulfillment in both this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize the detrimental effects of covetousness and the strength to cultivate piety in our hearts. May He bless us with contentment, gratitude, and a deep sense of spirituality. Ameen.
