أنَا يَعْسُوبُ المُؤْمِنينَ، والمالُ يَعْسُوبُ الفُجّارِ۔
I am the leader (ya‘sūb) of the believers and wealth is the leader of the wicked.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Muhammad (S) And His Progeny)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
I am the leader (ya‘sūb) of the believers and wealth is the leader of the wicked.
This Hadith highlights the profound wisdom and insight of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in describing the role of a leader and the influence of wealth.
The word "ya‘sūb" in Arabic, translated as "leader," carries a deeper meaning. It refers to someone who guides, directs, and sets an example for others. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing his role as the spiritual leader of the believers, guiding them towards righteousness and truth. He is the one who leads by example, embodying the qualities of piety, knowledge, and justice.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:7),
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance, and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.
This verse emphasizes the importance of following the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his chosen successors, such as Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). They are the leaders appointed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to guide the believers towards righteousness and away from wrongdoing. Their leadership is based on divine knowledge and wisdom, which is essential for the spiritual growth and well-being of the Muslim community.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that wealth is the leader of the wicked. This statement highlights the potential dangers and temptations associated with material possessions. Wealth, when misused or prioritized above moral values, can lead individuals astray and corrupt their hearts. It can become a source of arrogance, greed, and injustice.
The Quran also warns against the negative influence of wealth. In Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say, 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'
This verse reminds us to seek Allah's guidance and protection when dealing with wealth, as it has the potential to sway our actions and intentions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being over material possessions. It encourages us to follow the example of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who demonstrated utmost detachment from worldly desires and focused on the pursuit of knowledge, justice, and righteousness.
By recognizing Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) as the leader of the believers and understanding the potential pitfalls of wealth, Muslims can strive to emulate his qualities and seek a balanced approach to worldly possessions. This Hadith serves as a profound reminder of the importance of spiritual leadership and the need to prioritize the pursuit of knowledge and righteousness in our lives.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the wisdom to follow the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
