Hadith #10574

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The souls of the virtuous are averse to the souls of the wicked.

This enlightening Hadith highlights the stark contrast between the righteous and the wicked individuals. To fully comprehend the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words.

The word "nufus" refers to the souls or inner beings of individuals. It represents the essence of a person, encompassing their thoughts, desires, and intentions. The term "abrār" signifies the virtuous or righteous individuals who strive to obey Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and follow His guidance. On the other hand, the word "ashrār" denotes the wicked or evil individuals who deviate from the path of righteousness and indulge in sinful actions.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179),

And certainly, We have created many of the jinn and mankind for Hell. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

This verse emphasizes the existence of individuals who are spiritually blind and deaf, lacking the ability to comprehend the truth. Their souls are inclined towards evil, and they are heedless of the consequences of their actions. In contrast, the virtuous individuals possess hearts that are receptive to guidance, eyes that perceive the truth, and ears that listen to the call of righteousness.

Another verse that sheds light on the concept mentioned in the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:7), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allah has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance, and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.

This verse highlights the distinction between the believers and the disbelievers. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has instilled faith in the hearts of the believers, making it beloved to them, while disbelief, defiance, and disobedience are detested by them. This demonstrates the inherent aversion of the souls of the virtuous towards the souls of the wicked.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for righteousness and distance themselves from wickedness. The virtuous individuals, through their actions and intentions, naturally repel and reject the evil inclinations of the wicked.
