(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The merit of an action is the sincerity in it.

This impactful saying emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our actions, highlighting that the true value of any deed lies in the purity of intention behind it.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (fadilah) "فَضيلَةُ" refers to the merit or virtue of an action. It signifies the excellence and value of a deed in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The term (al-'amal) "العَمَلِ" means action or deed. It encompasses all acts performed by an individual, whether they are physical or spiritual in nature. Finally, (al-ikhlas) "الإخْلاصُ" translates to sincerity or purity of intention. It denotes the act of performing an action solely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), seeking His pleasure alone.

The importance of sincerity in our actions is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:11),

Say, 'Indeed, I have been commanded to worship Allah, sincere in my religion.'

This verse highlights the significance of sincerity in worship, as Prophet Muhammad () was commanded to worship Allah with pure devotion and sincerity.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.

This verse reiterates the commandment of sincere worship, emphasizing that the sole purpose of our actions should be to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His pleasure.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the merit of any action lies not in its outward appearance or the praise it receives from others, but in the purity of intention behind it. When we perform an action sincerely for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without any ulterior motives or desire for recognition, it becomes a means of drawing closer to Him and attaining His pleasure.

For example, if a person donates a large sum of money to a charitable cause, but their intention is to gain fame or recognition, the merit of their action diminishes. However, if another person donates a small amount with the sole intention of seeking Allah's pleasure and helping those in need, their action holds greater value in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Sincerity in our actions also has profound consequences on our spiritual growth and development. When we strive to purify our intentions and seek only Allah's pleasure, we cultivate a deeper connection with Him. Our actions become a means of self-purification and spiritual elevation, enabling us to attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His mercy.

Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly reflect on their intentions and strive for sincerity in all aspects of life. Whether it is in our worship, interactions with others, or pursuit of knowledge, we should always seek to align our intentions with the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of sincerity in our actions. It teaches us that the true merit of any deed lies in the purity of intention behind it. By striving for sincerity in all aspects of our lives, we can attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and ensure that our actions are pleasing to Him. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to purify our intentions and perform actions solely for His sake.
