إنْ أحْبَبْتَ أنْ تَكُونَ أسْعَدَ النّاسِ بِما عَلِمْتَ فَاعْمَلْ۔
If you would like to be the most felicitous of people through what you have learnt, then act upon it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Felicitous)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a wise utterance that emphasizes the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also putting it into practice. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its deeper meaning in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (if you would like) "أحْبَبْتَ" and (then act upon it) "فَاعْمَلْ". The word "أحْبَبْتَ" is derived from the root word "حب" which means love. It signifies a desire or inclination towards something. In this context, it refers to the individual's aspiration to be the happiest person by applying the knowledge they have acquired. The word "فَاعْمَلْ" is derived from the root word "عمل" which means to act or perform. It emphasizes the importance of putting knowledge into action.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and its practical application. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah says, (Quran 39:9)
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It implies that knowledge alone is not sufficient; it must be accompanied by action.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr, Allah states, (Quran 103:1-3)
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes the importance of righteous actions and mutual advice in attaining success. It reinforces the idea that knowledge must be translated into action for it to have a positive impact on an individual's life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to not only seek knowledge but also to implement it in their lives. It encourages individuals to strive for happiness and felicity by applying the knowledge they have acquired. This Hadith motivates Muslims to actively engage in righteous deeds and to use their knowledge for the betterment of themselves and society.
By acting upon the knowledge we possess, we can bring about positive change in our lives and the lives of others. For example, if one acquires knowledge about the importance of charity, they should actively engage in acts of charity to benefit those in need. Similarly, if one learns about the significance of honesty, they should practice honesty in all aspects of their life, thereby fostering trust and integrity.
The consequences of implementing this Hadith are manifold. Firstly, it leads to personal growth and spiritual development. By acting upon knowledge, individuals strengthen their relationship with Allah and increase their understanding of His commands. Secondly, it promotes a sense of responsibility towards society. When individuals apply their knowledge for the betterment of others, they contribute to the well-being of the community and establish a just and compassionate society.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we realize that knowledge without action is incomplete. It is through the practical application of knowledge that we can truly benefit ourselves and others. As Muslims, we should strive to be among those who not only seek knowledge but also act upon it. By doing so, we can attain true happiness and become a source of inspiration for others.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge and the strength to act upon it. May He bless us with the ability to be the most felicitous of people through our actions. Ameen.
