مَنْ لَمْ يُنْجِهِ الحَقُّ، أهْلَكَهُ الباطِلُ۔
One who is not saved by the truth is destroyed by falsehood.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Truth)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ لَمْ يُنْجِهِ الحَقُّ، أهْلَكَهُ الباطِلُ۔
This can be translated as,
One who is not saved by the truth is destroyed by falsehood.
Let us now delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. (al-haqq) "الحَقُّ" refers to the truth, which is an essential concept in Islam. It encompasses the absolute reality, the divine guidance, and the path of righteousness. The word (al-batil) "الباطِلُ" refers to falsehood, which represents everything that is contrary to the truth, misleading, and devoid of any substance or validity.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of seeking and adhering to the truth. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 17:81)
And say, 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse highlights the eternal nature of truth and the inevitable demise of falsehood.
Furthermore, the Quran warns about the consequences of following falsehood. In Surah Yunus, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 27:82)
And when the word befalls them, We will bring forth for them a creature from the earth speaking to them, [saying] that the people were, of Our verses, not certain [in faith].
This verse illustrates how those who are deceived by falsehood will be led astray and lose certainty in the signs of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the critical importance of being guided by the truth. It serves as a reminder that those who do not seek salvation through the truth will inevitably be destroyed by falsehood. This destruction can manifest in various ways, such as spiritual confusion, moral corruption, and societal decay.
For example, in today's world, we witness the destructive consequences of individuals and societies deviating from the truth. When people abandon the principles of justice, honesty, and compassion, they become susceptible to falsehoods and fall into the traps of corruption, oppression, and immorality. The absence of truth leads to chaos, division, and the erosion of values that are essential for the well-being of individuals and communities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful saying serves as a call to action for Muslims. It urges us to seek the truth, hold steadfast to it, and propagate it in our lives and societies. By doing so, we protect ourselves from the destructive forces of falsehood and contribute to the establishment of a just and righteous world.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the critical importance of being saved by the truth. It warns us about the destructive consequences of being led astray by falsehood. As Muslims, it is our duty to seek the truth, adhere to it, and strive for its establishment in our lives and societies. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to the truth and protect us from the perils of falsehood.
