— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best [form of] faith is a beautiful character.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the significance of having good moral qualities and virtuous behavior as an integral part of one's faith. Let us delve deeper into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (iman) "إيمان" in Arabic refers to faith or belief. It encompasses both belief in the heart and the actions that emanate from it. It is important to note that faith is not limited to mere verbal affirmation but is a comprehensive concept that encompasses one's entire being. The Hadith highlights that the best form of faith is characterized by (jameel al-khulq) "جَمِيلُ الخُلْقِ", which translates to a beautiful character.
The Quranic verses support the significance of having a beautiful character as an essential aspect of faith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4),
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse praises the character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and serves as an example for Muslims to strive towards. The Prophet's (ﷺ) character was a reflection of his faith, and it is through his character that he was able to attract people towards Islam.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes that the true measure of nobility and superiority in the sight of Allah lies in righteousness and piety, which are reflected in one's character and actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the importance of aligning one's faith with their character. It serves as a reminder that true faith is not limited to performing religious rituals but extends to how one interacts with others and conducts themselves in society. A person with a beautiful character is one who embodies the teachings of Islam in their daily life, showing kindness, compassion, honesty, and integrity.
A beautiful character has far-reaching consequences. It not only impacts an individual's relationship with Allah but also influences their interactions with fellow human beings. A person with a beautiful character is more likely to be respected, trusted, and loved by others. They become a source of inspiration and guidance for those around them, attracting others towards the beauty of Islam.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of continuously striving to improve our character. It requires self-reflection, self-discipline, and a sincere desire to emulate the noble qualities of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By embodying a beautiful character, we not only strengthen our faith but also contribute positively to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the best form of faith is a beautiful character. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which highlight the significance of righteousness, piety, and noble conduct. A beautiful character is a reflection of true faith and serves as a means to attract others towards the beauty of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain a beautiful character that is pleasing to Him.
