كَثْرَةُ الاِعْتِذارِ تُعَظِّمُ الذُّنُوبَ۔
Too much apology magnifies the sins.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Apologizing And Offering Excuses)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كَثْرَةُ الاِعْتِذارِ تُعَظِّمُ الذُّنُوبَ۔
This can be translated as,
Too much apology magnifies the sins.
Let us delve into the meaning of this beautiful saying. The word (i'thizar) "اِعْتِذار" refers to seeking forgiveness or apologizing for one's wrongdoings. The word (tu'azzimu) "تُعَظِّمُ" means to magnify or amplify, and (adh-dhunub) "الذُّنُوبَ" refers to sins.
To understand the wisdom behind this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 222:
Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah and constantly repenting for our sins. However, it does not encourage excessive apologizing or dwelling on past mistakes.
Excessive apologies can lead to a negative mindset and self-pity, which can hinder personal growth and spiritual development. It is essential for Muslims to acknowledge their mistakes, seek forgiveness from Allah, and strive to rectify their behavior. However, constantly dwelling on past wrongdoings without taking proactive steps towards improvement can be counterproductive.
In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.
This verse reminds us to avoid excessive self-blame and negative assumptions about ourselves and others. Constantly apologizing for every little mistake can lead to an unhealthy mindset and may even make others perceive us in a negative light.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound wisdom and knowledge, highlights the importance of balance in seeking forgiveness. While it is crucial to acknowledge our mistakes and seek forgiveness, excessively magnifying our sins through constant apologies can lead to a sense of hopelessness and despair.
Instead, Muslims should focus on sincere repentance, seeking forgiveness from Allah, and making a conscious effort to rectify their actions. This involves reflecting on our mistakes, learning from them, and striving to improve ourselves. Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the Most Merciful and Forgiving, and He encourages us to turn to Him in repentance and seek His forgiveness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of balance in seeking forgiveness. While it is essential to acknowledge our mistakes and seek forgiveness from Allah, excessively magnifying our sins through constant apologies can hinder our spiritual growth. Instead, we should focus on sincere repentance, learning from our mistakes, and striving to improve ourselves. May Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and forgiveness.
