Verily Allah, the Glorified, has wraths and chastisements, so if [any of] it descends upon you, repel it with supplication; for indeed nothing can repel tribulation except supplication.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Supplication And The Supplicant)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the existence of the wrath and chastisements of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and advises the believers to repel these trials through supplication. The key words in this Hadith are (wraths) "سَطَوَات" and (chastisements) "نَقِمَات".
The word "سَطَوَات" refers to the anger and wrath of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that may be directed towards His creation due to their disobedience or transgressions. This wrath can manifest in various forms such as natural disasters, diseases, or other calamities. The word "نَقِمَات" refers to the punishments or retributions that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) may inflict upon individuals or communities as a consequence of their wrongdoing.
To repel these trials and tribulations, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises the believers to turn to supplication. Supplication is a powerful tool that connects the servant with his Creator, seeking His mercy, forgiveness, and protection. It is through sincere and heartfelt supplication that one can find solace and relief from the trials and tribulations that descend upon them.
The importance of supplication in seeking protection from calamities and tribulations is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186):
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.
Furthermore, in Surah Yunus (10:107), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good - then He is over all things competent.
These verses highlight the significance of supplication in seeking Allah's protection and mercy during times of difficulty. It is through supplication that one can find solace and relief from the trials and tribulations that befall them.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes the effectiveness of supplication in repelling tribulations by stating that
nothing can repel tribulation except supplication.
This statement underscores the power and efficacy of supplication in seeking Allah's intervention and protection. It serves as a reminder to the believers that they should never underestimate the power of supplication and should turn to it as their first line of defense against any adversity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a paragon of knowledge and spirituality. His deep understanding of the Quran and his unwavering faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) enabled him to provide profound insights and guidance to the Muslim community. His words in this Hadith serve as a reminder to all Muslims of the importance of supplication in seeking Allah's protection and repelling tribulations.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the existence of Allah's wrath and chastisements and advises the believers to repel these trials through supplication. It underscores the power and efficacy of supplication in seeking Allah's intervention and protection. As Muslims, we should always turn to supplication as a means of seeking Allah's mercy and repelling tribulations. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and ability to implement the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our lives.
