Hadith #3433

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he mentions four qualities that, when possessed by an individual, bring them the ultimate goodness in both this world and the Hereafter. These qualities are: truthful speech, fulfilling the trust, abstinence from consuming what is forbidden, and good character.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these qualities and explore their significance in the light of the Quran.

1. Truthful Speech (صِدْقُ حَديث): Truthfulness in speech is a fundamental virtue emphasized in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran: (Quran 9:119)

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true in their words.

2. Fulfilling the Trust (أداءُ أمانَة): Fulfilling the trust refers to being honest and reliable in fulfilling one's obligations and responsibilities. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran: (Quran 4:58)

Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding trust and being just in all matters. Fulfilling the trust not only maintains the social fabric of society but also earns the pleasure of Allah.

3. Abstinence from Consuming What is Forbidden (عِفَّةُ بَطْن): Abstinence from consuming what is forbidden refers to refraining from indulging in prohibited acts, particularly in matters of food and drink. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran: (Quran 2:172)

O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.

This verse highlights the importance of consuming lawful and pure sustenance. Abstaining from what is forbidden not only purifies the body and soul but also ensures that one's actions are in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

4. Good Character (حُسْنُ خُلق): Good character encompasses a range of virtuous qualities such as kindness, patience, humility, and forgiveness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran: (Quran 68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse praises the exemplary character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive towards developing good character. Possessing good character not only enhances one's relationships with others but also reflects the beauty of Islam to the world.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights these four qualities as the keys to attaining goodness in both this world and the Hereafter.
