He (‘a) was asked about destiny so he said: It is a dark path, so do not traverse it, and it is a deep sea, so do not dive into it, and it is a secret of Allah, the Glorified, so do not trouble yourself with [trying to understand] it.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides us with profound insights into the concept of destiny or qadr. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes it as a dark path, a deep sea, and a secret of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The term (طَريقٌ مُظْلِمٌ) "dark path" signifies the complexity and uncertainty of destiny. It implies that the knowledge of what lies ahead is concealed from us, and we are unable to fully comprehend the intricacies of our fate. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 24:44)

And it is Allah who determines [the course of] the night and the day. Indeed, in that is a lesson for those who have vision.

This verse highlights that the knowledge of the exact course of events is known only to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and as humans, we are not meant to fully comprehend it.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further compares destiny to a (بَحْرٌ عَميقٌ) "deep sea". This metaphor emphasizes the vastness and profoundness of the concept of qadr. Just as the depths of the sea hold countless mysteries and treasures, the intricacies of destiny are beyond our limited understanding. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 6:59)

And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.

This verse highlights that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) possesses the knowledge of the unseen, including the intricacies of destiny.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes destiny as the (سِرُّ اللّهِ) "secret of Allah". This phrase emphasizes that the knowledge of destiny is known only to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and it is beyond our comprehension. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran, (Quran 72:26-27)

He is the Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before each messenger and behind him observers.

This verse highlights that the knowledge of the unseen, including the intricacies of destiny, is known only to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and is revealed to His chosen messengers.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guidance in this Hadith advises us not to delve too deeply into the complexities of destiny. Instead, we should focus on fulfilling our responsibilities and obligations in accordance with the teachings of Islam. We should strive to make the best choices in our lives, seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his progeny.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we realize that our limited understanding should not lead us to question or challenge the wisdom of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Rather, it should humble us and strengthen our reliance on Him. We should trust in His divine plan and have faith that whatever comes our way is ultimately for our own benefit, even if we may not fully comprehend it.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to acknowledge the limitations of our understanding and to trust in the wisdom and knowledge of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages us to focus on fulfilling our responsibilities and obligations, seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his progeny. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to navigate the complexities of destiny with patience and trust in His divine plan.
