مَنْ وادَّ السَّخيفَ أعْرَبَ عَنْ سَخَفِهِ۔
Whoever befriends a silly person proclaims his own silliness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affection And Friendship)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ وادَّ السَّخيفَ أعْرَبَ عَنْ سَخَفِهِ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever befriends a silly person proclaims his own silliness.
Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. The word (wadda) "وادَّ" means to befriend or associate with someone. The term (as-sakhifah) "السَّخيفَ" refers to a silly or foolish person. And the word (a'raba) "أعْرَبَ" means to express or proclaim.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Furqan, verse 27:
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.
This verse highlights the regret of those who followed the wrong path and did not seek guidance from the Prophet (ﷺ) and his righteous companions.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah, verse 1, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth.
This verse emphasizes the importance of choosing our companions wisely and not befriending those who oppose the truth.
Now, let us reflect on the exegesis of the Hadith itself. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is teaching us a valuable lesson about the impact of our associations. When we befriend a silly or foolish person, we are essentially proclaiming our own silliness. This means that the company we keep reflects our own character and intellect.
By associating with individuals who lack wisdom or engage in foolish behavior, we risk adopting their traits and attitudes. Our actions and choices are influenced by the people we surround ourselves with. If we surround ourselves with those who are wise and righteous, we are more likely to develop those qualities within ourselves. Conversely, if we associate with those who are foolish or engage in silly behavior, we may find ourselves falling into the same patterns.
The consequences of befriending silly individuals can be detrimental to our spiritual growth and overall well-being. It can lead us astray from the path of righteousness and hinder our progress towards attaining closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Moreover, it can tarnish our reputation and credibility as Muslims, as others may judge us based on the company we keep.
Therefore, it is crucial for us as Muslims to carefully choose our companions and surround ourselves with individuals who possess wisdom, knowledge, and righteousness. We should seek the company of those who inspire us to be better Muslims and who help us in our journey towards attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the negative influences of foolishness and ensure that our associations reflect our commitment to the truth and our pursuit of excellence.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for us to be mindful of the company we keep. Befriending silly individuals not only reflects our own silliness but also exposes us to negative influences that can hinder our spiritual growth. Let us seek the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to choose companions who will uplift us and help us in our journey towards attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to make righteous choices in our associations and protect us from the negative consequences of befriending those who lead us astray.
