يَغْلِبُ الْمِقْدَارُعَلَى التَّقْديرِ حَتَّى تَكُونَ الاْفَةُ فِي التَّدْبِيرِ۔
Destiny holds sway over (our) predetermination till effort itself brings about ruin.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #459)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Destiny holds sway over (our) predetermination till effort itself brings about ruin.
Let us delve into the meaning of this profound statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (destiny) "مِقْدَارُ", (predetermination) "تَّقْدِيرِ", (ruin) "اْفَةُ", and (effort) "تَّدْبِيرِ". The word "مِقْدَارُ" refers to the divine decree or the predetermined measure of events that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has ordained for each individual. "تَّقْدِيرِ" refers to the specific plan or course of action that is destined for us. "اْفَةُ" signifies ruin or destruction, while "تَّدْبِيرِ" refers to human effort or endeavor.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286:
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse emphasizes that Allah's decree takes into account our capabilities and limitations. It implies that destiny is not an unchangeable force that restricts our actions, but rather a framework within which we have the freedom to make choices and exert effort.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 84, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And say: 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit. And grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in our endeavors. It reminds us that while destiny may play a role in shaping our lives, our efforts and actions are crucial in determining the outcomes.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the significance of human effort and the potential consequences of neglecting it. It implies that relying solely on destiny without taking proactive steps can lead to ruin. This does not mean that destiny can be completely altered or disregarded, but rather that our efforts and actions are an essential component of the divine plan.
To illustrate this concept, let us consider an example. Imagine a student who believes that success in exams is solely determined by destiny and does not put in any effort to study. Such a student is likely to face failure and ruin. On the other hand, a student who recognizes the importance of effort, studies diligently, and seeks Allah's guidance is more likely to achieve success.
In light of this Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to strive for excellence in all aspects of life, while acknowledging that destiny is a part of Allah's divine plan. We should not become complacent or fatalistic, but rather take responsibility for our actions and make sincere efforts to achieve our goals. By aligning our efforts with the teachings of Islam and seeking Allah's guidance, we can navigate the path of destiny and attain success in this world and the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the delicate balance between destiny and human effort. It emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps and making sincere efforts while recognizing that destiny is ultimately in the hands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By understanding this concept and striving for excellence, Muslims can navigate the complexities of life and fulfill their potential as servants of Allah. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
