(Ghurar al-Hikam: Divine Decree And Destiny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

قَضاءٌ مُتْقَنٌ وعِلْمٌ مُبْرَمٌ۔

This can be translated as,

The verdict [of Allah] is precise and His knowledge is absolute.

Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (qada') "قَضَاءٌ" refers to the decree or verdict of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It signifies the divine decision that encompasses all aspects of creation. This decree is precise and perfect, leaving no room for error or injustice. Allah's verdict is based on His infinite wisdom and knowledge, ensuring that everything occurs according to His divine plan.

The term (mutqan) "مُتْقَنٌ" emphasizes the precision and perfection of Allah's decree. It implies that His judgment is flawless, leaving no room for doubt or imperfection. This word highlights the meticulousness with which Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) administers His affairs, ensuring that justice is served and every matter is resolved with utmost accuracy.

Furthermore, the phrase (ilmun mubram) "عِلْمٌ مُبْرَمٌ" signifies the absolute knowledge of Allah. It denotes that His knowledge is firm, unshakable, and comprehensive. Allah's knowledge encompasses everything, from the smallest particle to the vastness of the universe. It is not limited by time or space, and nothing is hidden from His all-encompassing knowledge.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for further guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:59),

And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.

This verse highlights the all-encompassing knowledge of Allah, who holds the keys to the unseen. He knows every detail of what is on the land and in the sea, including the falling of a leaf. His knowledge extends to even the most hidden aspects of creation, whether they are in the depths of the earth or in the darkness of the night. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and everything is recorded in a clear and comprehensive manner.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hajj (22:70), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Do you not know that Allah knows what is in the heaven and earth? Indeed, that is in a Record. Indeed, that, for Allah, is easy.

This verse emphasizes that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything in the heavens and the earth. It is recorded in a divine record, and nothing is beyond His awareness. His knowledge is not limited by any constraints, and nothing is too difficult for Him. This verse further reinforces the concept of Allah's absolute knowledge, which is highlighted in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we realize the profound implications it holds for us as Muslims. It reminds us that Allah's verdicts are precise and just, and His knowledge is all-encompassing. This understanding should instill in us a sense of trust and reliance on Allah's wisdom and judgment. We should have faith that everything that happens in our lives is part of His divine plan, and He knows what is best for us, even when we may not comprehend it.

Moreover, this Hadith serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and this Hadith reflects his deep understanding of the divine decree and the absolute knowledge of Allah. As Muslims, we should strive to acquire knowledge and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), as they provide us with the tools to navigate through life's challenges and make informed decisions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the precision and perfection of Allah's verdicts and the absolute nature of His knowledge. It encourages us to trust in His divine plan and seek knowledge to better understand His wisdom. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to comprehend the depth of this Hadith and apply its teachings in our lives.
