(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sense Of Honour And Possessiveness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

غَيْرَةُ الرَّجُلِ عَلى قَدْرِ أنَفَتِهِ۔

This can be translated as,

A man’s sense of honour is to the extent of his self-respect.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (ghayrah) "غَيْرَةُ" refers to a person's sense of honor, dignity, and self-respect. It is the feeling of protectiveness and concern for one's reputation and the reputation of those they care about. It is a noble quality that encourages individuals to uphold their values and principles.

The phrase (ala qadr infa'tihi) "عَلى قَدْرِ أنَفَتِهِ" can be understood as

to the extent of his self-respect.

It implies that a person's sense of honor is directly proportional to the level of self-respect they possess. In other words, the more self-respect one has, the stronger their sense of honor will be.

This Hadith reminds us of the importance of maintaining our self-respect and dignity. It encourages us to be mindful of our actions and to uphold our values, even in the face of adversity. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has emphasized the significance of self-respect and honor in numerous verses of the Quran.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of respecting and honoring others, regardless of their background or status. It teaches us to refrain from mocking or belittling others, as it goes against the principles of self-respect and honor. By treating others with kindness and respect, we uphold our own sense of honor.

Another verse that aligns with the teachings of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:70), where Allah says,

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.

This verse reminds us that Allah has bestowed honor upon all human beings. It is our responsibility to recognize and uphold this honor by maintaining our self-respect and treating others with dignity. When we do so, we not only fulfill our duty towards ourselves but also towards our Creator.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-respect as the foundation of a person's sense of honor. When we have a strong sense of self-respect, we are motivated to act in a manner that upholds our values and principles. This, in turn, leads to positive consequences in our personal and social lives.

For example, a person with a strong sense of honor will refrain from engaging in dishonest practices, as it goes against their self-respect. They will strive to be truthful and trustworthy, knowing that these qualities are essential for maintaining their honor. This not only earns them respect from others but also strengthens their own self-esteem.

On a societal level, a community that values self-respect and honor will promote justice, equality, and integrity. Such a community will be characterized by individuals who are committed to upholding moral values and treating others with respect. This fosters a harmonious and virtuous society, where individuals can thrive and contribute positively.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that a person's sense of honor is directly linked to their self-respect. By maintaining our self-respect and upholding our values, we can cultivate a strong sense of honor. This leads to positive consequences in our personal and social lives, as we strive to be truthful, just, and respectful towards others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in embodying these noble qualities and grant us the strength to uphold our honor and dignity.
