Hadith #7501

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be cautious and refrain from belittling or disparaging scholars. The Imam warns us that such behavior can have detrimental consequences, not only for ourselves but also for our reputation and the way others perceive us.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this hadith to gain a better understanding of its significance. The word (tastakhiffa) "تَسْتَخِفَّ" in Arabic means to underestimate, belittle, or treat with contempt. The term (al-'ulama') "العُلَماءِ" refers to the scholars, those who possess knowledge and expertise in various fields, particularly in matters of religion.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cautions us against underestimating the scholars, emphasizing that doing so will have negative consequences for us. This warning serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and valuing the knowledge and wisdom of those who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

To further emphasize the significance of this advice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the importance of verifying information and seeking knowledge before passing judgment or forming opinions. Disparaging scholars without proper understanding can lead to harm and regret.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, when you are told, 'Space yourselves' in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, 'Arise,' then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse emphasizes the importance of giving due respect and honor to those who possess knowledge. By doing so, we not only elevate ourselves but also receive blessings and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The consequences of underestimating scholars can be far-reaching. Firstly, it degrades our own character and intellect. By dismissing the knowledge and expertise of scholars, we limit our own growth and understanding. We deprive ourselves of the opportunity to learn from those who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom.

Secondly, it leads others to think ill of us. When we belittle scholars, we are perceived as arrogant and ignorant. This tarnishes our reputation and diminishes our credibility. People are less likely to trust and respect us if we display a lack of regard for those who possess knowledge and expertise.

Lastly, underestimating scholars creates an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust. When we disregard the opinions and insights of scholars, we are more likely to be met with skepticism and doubt. Others may expect evil from us, assuming that our lack of respect for knowledge reflects a lack of integrity and sincerity.

Reflecting on this hadith, we are reminded of the importance of humility, respect, and continuous learning. We should approach scholars with an open mind, seeking knowledge and guidance from their expertise. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also contribute to a society that values and appreciates the pursuit of knowledge.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize the value of scholars and the humility to learn from them. May He guide us on the path of knowledge and understanding, and protect us from arrogance and ignorance. Ameen.
