أقَلُّ شَيْء الصِّدْقُ والأمانَةُ۔
he least of things [required for salvation] is truthfulness and trustworthiness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Least)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
أقَلُّ شَيْء الصِّدْقُ والأمانَةُ۔
This can be translated as,
The least of things [required for salvation] is truthfulness and trustworthiness.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith. The word (sidq) "صِّدْقُ" refers to truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty. It encompasses speaking the truth, being truthful in one's actions, and having a genuine and sincere heart. The word (al-amanah) "الأمانَةُ" refers to trustworthiness, reliability, and fulfilling one's responsibilities and obligations. It includes being faithful to one's promises, protecting the trust of others, and being reliable in all aspects of life.
To understand the significance of truthfulness and trustworthiness in Islam, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119),
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with truthful individuals, as their company will inspire and encourage us to embody truthfulness in our own lives.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1),
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse highlights the significance of fulfilling our obligations and promises, which is an essential aspect of trustworthiness. By being trustworthy and reliable, we uphold the sanctity of our relationships and maintain the trust that others have placed in us.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that truthfulness and trustworthiness are not merely recommended virtues but are essential for our salvation. These qualities have profound implications for our personal and societal well-being.
When we are truthful, we build a foundation of trust and sincerity in our interactions with others. This fosters healthy relationships based on honesty and integrity. People are more likely to confide in us, seek our advice, and rely on us when they know that we are truthful and trustworthy. Conversely, dishonesty and deceit erode trust, leading to broken relationships and a breakdown of societal harmony.
Moreover, truthfulness and trustworthiness have a direct impact on our spiritual growth. When we are truthful, we align ourselves with the attributes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), who is the Ultimate Truth. By embodying truthfulness, we strive to be closer to Allah and fulfill our purpose as His servants.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, and his emphasis on truthfulness and trustworthiness stems from his deep understanding of the teachings of Islam. He recognized that these qualities are the foundation upon which a just and righteous society can be built.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that truthfulness and trustworthiness are not trivial matters but are essential for our salvation. By embodying these qualities, we uphold the teachings of Islam, nurture healthy relationships, and strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us strive to be truthful and trustworthy in all aspects of our lives, for it is through these qualities that we can attain true success and fulfillment in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah guide us and grant us the strength to embody truthfulness and trustworthiness in all our actions.
