The disbeliever is a vile deceiver, perfidious, deluded by his ignorance and duped.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Disbeliever)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he describes the disbeliever using powerful words. Let us delve into the meanings of the important words used in this Hadith.
1. (khabbun) "خَبٌّ" - This word refers to someone who is vile, wicked, and morally corrupt. It describes the disbeliever as someone who possesses evil qualities and engages in sinful behavior.
2. (la'īmun) "لَئِيمٌ" - This term denotes someone who is deceitful, cunning, and treacherous. It highlights the disbeliever's tendency to deceive and manipulate others for their own gain.
3. (kha'un) "خَؤُنٌ" - This word signifies someone who is deluded, misguided, and astray. It emphasizes the disbeliever's state of being lost and ignorant, leading them away from the path of truth.
4. (maghroorun) "مَغْرُورٌ" - This term describes someone who is arrogant, proud, and haughty. It highlights the disbeliever's inflated sense of self-importance, which stems from their ignorance and lack of guidance.
5. (bi-jahlihi) "بِجَهْلِهِ" - This phrase means
due to his ignorance.
It emphasizes that the disbeliever's delusion and arrogance are a direct result of their lack of knowledge and understanding.
6. (maghboonun) "مَغْبُونٌ" - This word refers to someone who is duped, deceived, and misled. It highlights the disbeliever's vulnerability to being misled and manipulated by falsehood due to their ignorance and arrogance.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that support and shed light on the meanings conveyed in this Hadith.
1. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:206):
And when it is said to him, 'Fear Allah,' pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.
This verse highlights the arrogance and pride of the disbeliever when they are reminded of their duty to fear Allah. It echoes the description of the disbeliever in the Hadith as someone who is (maghroorun) "مَغْرُورٌ" - arrogant and haughty.
2. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse emphasizes the lowly status of those who reject faith and fail to use their intellect to recognize the truth. It aligns with the description of the disbeliever in the Hadith as someone who is (khabbun) "خَبٌّ" - vile and morally corrupt.
These Quranic verses provide a glimpse into the consequences and motivations behind the characteristics described in the Hadith. The disbeliever's arrogance, deceitfulness, and delusion stem from their ignorance and rejection of the truth. This ignorance blinds them to the guidance of Allah and leads them to engage in sinful behavior.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge, understand the teachings of Islam, and avoid falling into the traps of ignorance and arrogance. It also highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of disbelief and guarding ourselves against its negative influences.
As Muslims, we should reflect upon this Hadith and strive to increase our knowledge and understanding of Islam. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the vices described in this Hadith and strengthen our faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and protect us from the characteristics of the disbeliever.
