غايَةُ الفَضائِلِ العَقْلُ۔
The highest of all merits is intelligence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The highest of all merits is intelligence.
This wise utterance emphasizes the significance of intellect and knowledge in Islam. The word used in this Hadith for intelligence is (‘aql) "عَقْلُ", which refers to the faculty of reason and understanding.
The importance of intelligence is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly encourages Muslims to reflect, ponder, and use their intellect to understand the signs of His creation. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2: 164)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding
This verse highlights the role of intellect in recognizing and appreciating the signs of Allah's creation.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and using one's intellect to distinguish between right and wrong. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah says, (39: 41)
Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager over them
This verse highlights the responsibility of individuals to seek knowledge and use their intellect to follow the guidance of the Quran.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that intelligence is the highest of all merits. This means that possessing knowledge and using one's intellect is superior to any other virtue or quality. Intelligence enables individuals to make informed decisions, understand the teachings of Islam, and navigate through the complexities of life.
Intelligence is not limited to academic knowledge or worldly wisdom. It encompasses a deep understanding of religious principles, moral values, and the ability to apply them in daily life. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of intelligence in his own life. His profound insights and teachings continue to guide and inspire Muslims to this day.
The consequences of neglecting intelligence are evident in society. Without the guidance of intellect, individuals may fall into ignorance, superstition, and misguided beliefs. They may be easily swayed by false ideologies and become vulnerable to manipulation. On the other hand, those who prioritize intelligence and seek knowledge are empowered to make informed choices, contribute positively to society, and uphold the principles of Islam.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), Muslims are reminded of the importance of nurturing their intellect and seeking knowledge. They are encouraged to engage in critical thinking, pursue education, and continuously strive to expand their understanding of Islam. By doing so, they can fulfill their duty as responsible Muslims and contribute to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of intelligence as the highest of all merits. It emphasizes the importance of using one's intellect to seek knowledge, understand the signs of Allah, and make informed decisions. Muslims are encouraged to prioritize intelligence and continuously strive to expand their understanding of Islam, enabling them to navigate through life with wisdom and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to cultivate our intellect and seek knowledge that is pleasing to Him.
