(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Heart)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous servants of Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "القلب خازن اللسان" which translates to

The heart is the treasurer of the tongue.

This impactful saying highlights the significance of the heart in controlling our speech and the responsibility it holds in guarding our words.

The word (qalb) "قلب" refers to the heart, not only as a physical organ but also as the center of emotions, thoughts, and intentions. It is the core of our being, the place where decisions are made, and the source of our actions. The heart is not merely a physical entity but a spiritual one as well, deeply connected to our soul and consciousness.

The word (khazin) "خازن" means treasurer or guardian. It implies that the heart has the role of safeguarding and controlling the tongue, which represents our speech and communication. Just as a treasurer is responsible for protecting and managing valuable assets, the heart is entrusted with the task of overseeing and regulating our words.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of controlling our speech and using it wisely. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10-11):

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer, [And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip.

These verses warn against following those who engage in vain and harmful speech. They remind us to be cautious of our own words and to avoid indulging in gossip, slander, or any form of harmful speech. The heart, as the treasurer of the tongue, should prevent such negative speech from being uttered.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of speaking with kindness and wisdom. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

This verse highlights the obligation to speak good words, to be kind and respectful in our interactions with others. It reminds us that our speech should be a means of spreading goodness, compassion, and understanding. The heart, as the treasurer of the tongue, should guide us to use our words in a manner that brings benefit and harmony to society.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder of the profound connection between the heart and the tongue. It reminds us that our words are a reflection of our inner state and that the heart plays a crucial role in determining the quality of our speech. If the heart is pure, filled with love, humility, and knowledge, it will guide the tongue to speak words of wisdom, truth, and righteousness.

Conversely, if the heart is tainted with arrogance, anger, or ignorance, it may lead the tongue to utter words that are hurtful, false, or divisive. Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to cultivate a pure and enlightened heart through seeking knowledge, practicing self-reflection, and purifying their intentions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "القلب خازن اللسان" highlights the responsibility of the heart in guarding and controlling our speech. It reminds us of the importance of using our words wisely, speaking with kindness, and avoiding harmful speech. By nurturing a pure and enlightened heart, we can ensure that our words reflect the teachings of Islam and contribute to the betterment of ourselves and society as a whole. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to guard our tongues and purify our hearts.
