(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Independent Of Others)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who becomes independent becomes an honour for his people and one who is needy becomes contemptible to them.

This profound statement highlights the significance of self-sufficiency and the negative perception society often holds towards those who rely on others for their needs.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (استغنى) "istaghna" refers to becoming self-sufficient or independent, while (كَرُمَ) "karum" signifies honor or nobility. On the other hand, (افتقر) "iftaqara" means to become needy or dependent, and (هانَ) "han" denotes contempt or disdain.

To comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of self-sufficiency and independence in several verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) for self-sufficiency and strength in his affairs.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25), Allah states,

We sent aforetime our messengers with clear signs and sent down with them the Book and the Balance, that people may stand forth in justice.

This verse emphasizes the importance of balance and justice in society, which can be achieved through self-sufficiency and independence.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that when an individual becomes self-sufficient, they become a source of honor and pride for their community. This is because their independence reflects their ability to contribute positively to society, whether it be through their knowledge, skills, or resources. When someone is self-sufficient, they are able to support and uplift those around them, thereby enhancing the overall well-being of the community.

Conversely, the Hadith highlights the negative perception society often holds towards those who are dependent or needy. This is not to say that those who are in need should be looked down upon, but rather it serves as a reminder for individuals to strive for self-sufficiency and not burden others unnecessarily. When someone is constantly reliant on others, it can create a sense of contempt or disdain within the community, as it may be perceived as a lack of effort or initiative on their part.

It is important to note that this Hadith does not imply that we should abandon those in need or withhold assistance from them. Islam teaches us the importance of compassion, charity, and supporting those who are less fortunate. However, it encourages individuals to strive for self-sufficiency and to be proactive in improving their own circumstances.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-reliance and the positive impact it can have on both individuals and society as a whole. It encourages us to develop our skills, knowledge, and resources in order to become independent and contribute positively to our communities. At the same time, it serves as a reminder to approach those in need with compassion and support, while also encouraging them to strive for self-sufficiency.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to become self-sufficient individuals who can positively impact our communities. May He also bless us with the ability to support and uplift those in need, while encouraging them to strive for self-sufficiency. Ameen.
