Hadith #4503

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالرِّفْقِ تَدُومُ الصُّحْبَةُ۔" This can be translated as,

Through gentleness, companionship lasts longer.

In this impactful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of gentleness in maintaining lasting and meaningful relationships.

The word (rifq) "رِّفْقِ" in this Hadith refers to gentleness, kindness, and tenderness. It encompasses a soft and compassionate approach towards others, treating them with respect, empathy, and understanding. It is a quality that fosters harmony, love, and companionship among individuals.

The significance of gentleness can be found in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages Muslims to adopt this noble trait in their interactions with others. In Surah Al-Imran (3:159), Allah says,

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse highlights the gentle and lenient approach of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) towards his companions. By being gentle, he was able to maintain their companionship and strengthen their bond. Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that gentleness is the key to sustaining lasting relationships.

Gentleness not only preserves companionship but also has a profound impact on the overall well-being of individuals and society. It creates an environment of trust, understanding, and harmony. When we treat others with gentleness, we inspire them to reciprocate the same behavior, leading to a cycle of kindness and compassion.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says,

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse emphasizes the unity and brotherhood among believers. By practicing gentleness, we can resolve conflicts and differences, fostering a sense of unity and brotherhood within the Muslim community.

Moreover, gentleness is not limited to our interactions with fellow Muslims. In Surah Al-Anbiya (21:107), Allah says,

And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was sent as a mercy to all of humanity, and his gentle and compassionate nature serves as a guiding example for us. By embodying gentleness, we can extend mercy and compassion to all people, regardless of their faith or background.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of gentleness in maintaining lasting companionship. By treating others with kindness, empathy, and respect, we create an environment of love and harmony.
