اَلعاقِلُ مَنْ أحْرَزَ أمْرَهُ۔
The intelligent person is one who safeguards his affair.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
العاقلُ من أحرزَ أمرَهُ
which translates to
The intelligent person is one who safeguards his affair.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of being wise and cautious in managing one's affairs.
Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (al-'aqil) "العاقلُ" refers to the intelligent or wise person. It encompasses not only intellectual capacity but also encompasses the ability to make sound judgments and decisions. It is a quality that is highly valued in Islam.
The term (ahraza) "أحرزَ" means to safeguard or protect. It implies taking measures to ensure the well-being and success of one's affairs. It involves being proactive, cautious, and diligent in managing one's responsibilities and obligations.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find support for the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:18),
which translates to
O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of being mindful of our actions and their consequences. It encourages believers to be cautious and conscientious in their dealings, just as the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises. By safeguarding our affairs and being mindful of our actions, we can ensure that we are making choices that align with the teachings of Islam.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَىٰ
which translates to
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse reminds us of the importance of preparing ourselves for the future and taking the necessary precautions. Just as a traveler prepares provisions for their journey, a wise person safeguards their affairs by seeking Taqwa, which is the best provision. Taqwa involves being conscious of Allah's presence, following His commandments, and avoiding anything that may lead to harm or disobedience.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we understand that being intelligent and wise is not limited to intellectual prowess alone. It encompasses the ability to make sound judgments, take precautions, and be mindful of the consequences of our actions. By safeguarding our affairs and seeking Taqwa, we can navigate through life's challenges with wisdom and success.
As Muslims, we should strive to be like the intelligent person described in this Hadith, who takes the necessary measures to protect and manage their affairs. By doing so, we can lead a life that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial to ourselves and others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to implement the teachings of this Hadith in our lives.
