اَلعَدْلُ خَيْرُ الحُكْمِ۔
Justice is the best judgment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل خير الحكم" which translates to
Justice is the best judgment.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.
The word (al-'adl) "العدل" refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It signifies the act of treating others with equality and giving each person their due rights. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized in both the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is described as (al-'Adl) "العدل", the Just, highlighting the significance of justice in the divine attributes.
To understand the importance of justice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah An-Nisa, verse 135, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of justice, even when it may go against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah's judgment is based on justice, and we should strive to uphold justice in all aspects of our lives.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 9, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes with justice. It emphasizes the need to establish justice as the foundation for reconciliation and peace. By doing so, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also earn the love and pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Justice is the best judgment,
reminds us that justice should be the guiding principle in all our decisions and actions. It serves as a reminder that true justice leads to the best outcomes, both in this world and the Hereafter.
When justice is upheld, it leads to a harmonious society where everyone's rights are respected and protected. It promotes equality, fairness, and compassion. Conversely, when justice is neglected, it can lead to oppression, inequality, and societal unrest.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of Islam. His commitment to justice was unparalleled, and he served as a beacon of justice during his caliphate. His famous saying reflects his wisdom and his understanding of the importance of justice in establishing a just and righteous society.
As Muslims, we should strive to embody the principles of justice in our daily lives. We should treat others with fairness, equality, and compassion. We should stand up against injustice and oppression, even if it means going against our own interests. By doing so, we can contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable society, in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to uphold justice in our lives and grant us the ability to be just in all our actions. May we follow the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to establish justice in our communities. Ameen.
