اَلبَذْلُ يَكْسِبُ الحَمْدَ۔
Generosity earns praise.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البذل يكسب الحمد" which translates to "Generosity earns praise." This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for Muslims in their daily lives.
Let us first explore the key words in this Hadith. (al-budhl) "البذل" refers to the act of giving or bestowing, particularly in terms of material possessions, wealth, or resources. It encompasses acts of charity, kindness, and selflessness. (yaksib) "يكسب" means to earn or acquire, implying that through the act of generosity, one gains or attains something valuable. And finally, (al-hamd) "الحمد" signifies praise, gratitude, and appreciation.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran, which provides numerous verses emphasizing the virtue of generosity and its rewards. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This ayah illustrates that when we give generously for the sake of Allah, our acts of charity are not only multiplied but also bear abundant fruits. Just as a single seed yields a bountiful harvest, our generosity brings forth blessings and rewards beyond our imagination. It is through our selfless giving that we earn the praise and blessings of Allah.
Another verse that resonates with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Insan (76:9), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
They give food, despite their own need for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, saying, 'We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We do not want any reward or thanks from you.'
This verse highlights the essence of true generosity, which is to give without expecting anything in return. When we give solely for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure and not seeking praise or gratitude from others, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran. Such selfless acts of giving earn the highest form of praise from Allah, as they demonstrate our sincerity and devotion to Him.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to cultivate a generous spirit and to understand the profound impact of our acts of giving. When we give generously, we not only benefit those in need but also elevate our own souls and earn the praise and blessings of Allah. Generosity is not limited to material possessions; it encompasses sharing one's time, knowledge, and resources to benefit others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified the virtue of generosity throughout his life. His knowledge and wisdom were freely shared with those who sought guidance, regardless of their social status or background. He would generously give from his wealth to support the poor and needy, even to the extent of giving away his own food when he had nothing else to offer.
The consequences of practicing generosity are far-reaching. When we give selflessly, we inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of goodness and compassion in society. Our acts of generosity can uplift the spirits of those in need, provide them with hope and support, and foster a sense of unity and solidarity among Muslims.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of cultivating a generous heart and embracing the spirit of selflessness. By giving generously, we not only earn the praise and blessings of Allah but also contribute to the betterment of our communities and the world at large. May Allah grant us the ability to embody the virtue of generosity and may our acts of giving be a means of earning His pleasure and eternal rewards.
