Hadith #10185

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

طاعَةُ النِّساءِ شِيمَةُ الحَمْقى۔

This can be translated as,

Obedience to women is the trait of the foolish.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. The word (ta'at) "طاعَةُ" refers to obedience or submission. (an-nisa') "النِّساءِ" means women, and (shimatu) "شِيمَةُ" can be understood as a trait or characteristic. Finally, (al-hamqa) "الحَمْقى" refers to the foolish or the ignorant.

To gain a comprehensive understanding of this Hadith, we must turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has provided us with numerous verses that shed light on the importance of wisdom, understanding, and the role of women in society.

In Surah An-Nisa, verse 34, Allah says,

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made one of them excel the other, and because they spend from their means.

This verse highlights the responsibility of men to protect and provide for women. It emphasizes the complementary nature of men and women, rather than promoting blind obedience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 35, Allah states,

Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

This verse emphasizes the equal importance of obedience and righteousness in both men and women.

Therefore, when Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that obedience to women is the trait of the foolish, he is not implying that women should not be respected or listened to. Rather, he is cautioning against blind obedience without wisdom and understanding. This Hadith serves as a reminder to both men and women to exercise wisdom and discernment in their actions and decisions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His statement highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding before blindly following anyone, regardless of their gender. It is a call to Muslims to be critical thinkers and to base their actions on sound judgment and guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
