آفَةُ العَقْلِ اَلْهَوى۔
The bane of the intellect is vain desire.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "آفَةُ العَقْلِ اَلْهَوى۔" This can be translated as,
The bane of the intellect is vain desire.
In this enlightening saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the detrimental effect of following one's base desires on the intellect.
Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith. The word (afeh) "آفَةُ" refers to a plague or a calamity that brings harm and destruction. It signifies something that corrupts and weakens. The word (al-'aql) "العَقْلِ" refers to the intellect or the rational faculty of a person. It is the ability to think, reason, and make sound judgments. Lastly, (al-hawa) "الهَوى" refers to vain desires or whimsical inclinations that are driven by one's lower self.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Yusuf, verse 53,
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse highlights the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil desires if not guided by the mercy of Allah. It emphasizes the importance of controlling our base desires and aligning them with the teachings of Islam.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 50, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse emphasizes the misguided nature of those who follow their desires without seeking guidance from Allah. It serves as a reminder that our intellect should be guided by divine revelation and not swayed by our whims and desires.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the destructive nature of following vain desires. When one allows their base desires to govern their actions, it clouds their judgment and hinders their ability to make sound decisions based on reason and intellect. Vain desires can lead a person astray from the path of righteousness and cause them to engage in sinful behavior.
For example, if a person is driven by the desire for wealth and material possessions, they may resort to dishonest means such as fraud or theft to fulfill their desires. This not only harms their own soul but also causes harm to others. Similarly, if one is driven by the desire for power and authority, they may oppress and exploit others to achieve their goals, disregarding the principles of justice and fairness.
The consequences of following vain desires are far-reaching. It can lead to a loss of moral values, ethical conduct, and spiritual growth. It can also lead to the deterioration of relationships, both with Allah and with fellow human beings. When one's intellect is clouded by vain desires, they become susceptible to making impulsive decisions that they may later regret.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant in controlling their desires and aligning them with the teachings of Islam. It calls upon us to prioritize the guidance of Allah and the teachings of the Quran over our own whims and desires. By doing so, we can ensure that our intellect remains clear and focused, enabling us to make decisions that are in line with the principles of Islam and beneficial for ourselves and society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the destructive nature of following vain desires. It emphasizes the importance of aligning our desires with the teachings of Islam and seeking guidance from Allah. By doing so, we can protect our intellect from being clouded by base desires and make decisions that are in line with the principles of Islam. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the harmful consequences of following our vain desires.
