Hadith #8227

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase "الغِنى يُطْغِي" from the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) translates to

Opulence brings about transgression

in English. This concise statement holds profound wisdom and serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the dangers that excessive wealth and material possessions can bring.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the corrupting influence of wealth when He says,

And if We willed, We could have made you [people] angels on the earth, succeeding one another. And indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

From these verses, we can infer that the pursuit of wealth and opulence can distract individuals from their true purpose in life, which is to worship Allah and seek His pleasure. When one becomes engrossed in accumulating material possessions, they may neglect their spiritual obligations and become prone to transgressions and moral corruption.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his deep knowledge and wisdom, highlights the negative consequences of opulence in this Hadith. Excessive wealth can lead to arrogance, greed, and a sense of self-sufficiency, causing individuals to transgress the boundaries set by Allah.
