في طاعَةِ الهَوى كُلُّ الغَوايَةِ۔
In succumbing to vain desire there is every [form of] deviation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
في طاعَةِ الهَوى كُلُّ الغَوايَةِ۔
This can be translated into English as,
In succumbing to vain desire there is every [form of] deviation.
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (ta'at) "طاعَةِ" refers to obedience or submission. (al-hawa) "الهَوى" means vain desire or whims. And (al-ghawayah) "الغَوايَةِ" signifies deviation or straying from the right path.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance and support. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:179),
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
This verse highlights the consequences of succumbing to vain desires and straying from the path of obedience to Allah. Those who follow their whims and desires without seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) are likened to livestock, devoid of understanding, sight, and hearing. They become more astray and oblivious to the truth.
In another verse, Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and not blindly following one's desires. Those who prioritize their own whims over the commandments of Allah are indeed the ones who are most astray. They have deviated from the path of righteousness and are devoid of divine guidance.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that succumbing to vain desires leads to various forms of deviation. When individuals prioritize their own desires over the commandments of Allah, they become susceptible to straying from the right path. This deviation can manifest in different ways, such as indulging in forbidden actions, neglecting obligatory duties, or adopting false beliefs.
For example, if a person allows their desire for wealth and material possessions to dictate their actions, they may engage in dishonest practices, such as fraud or exploitation. This deviation from ethical behavior not only harms others but also distances the individual from the path of righteousness prescribed by Allah.
Similarly, if an individual prioritizes their desire for worldly pleasures over their religious obligations, they may neglect acts of worship, such as prayer or fasting. This neglect leads to a spiritual void and weakens their connection with Allah, ultimately leading to further deviation from the path of righteousness.
Furthermore, when individuals follow their whims without seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), they may fall into the trap of false beliefs and ideologies. They become susceptible to the influence of misguided ideologies that contradict the teachings of Islam, leading them further away from the truth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious of succumbing to vain desires. By prioritizing obedience to Allah and seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can safeguard ourselves from the various forms of deviation that arise from following our whims. May Allah protect us from the allure of vain desires and guide us on the straight path.
