— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Keeping Promises And Fulfilling Pledges)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الوفاءُ نُبْلٌ۔" which translates to "Loyalty is nobility." This concise statement holds deep wisdom and carries profound implications for our lives as Muslims.
Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-wafa) "الوفاء" refers to loyalty, faithfulness, and fulfilling one's commitments. It encompasses sincerity, trustworthiness, and steadfastness in upholding one's promises and obligations. (nubl) "نُبْلٌ" refers to nobility, honor, and excellence. It signifies a high moral character, dignity, and virtuous conduct.
To understand the significance of loyalty as nobility, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our commitments and being loyal in various aspects of our lives. In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah says,
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.
This verse emphasizes the obligation of fulfilling our agreements and contracts, highlighting the importance of loyalty in our dealings with others.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:34), Allah says,
And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
This verse reminds us that we will be held accountable for our commitments, urging us to be loyal and true to our word. It emphasizes the moral and ethical responsibility of fulfilling our obligations, whether they are personal, social, or religious.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that loyalty is not merely a desirable trait, but it is a noble characteristic that elevates our status as Muslims. When we remain loyal to our commitments, we demonstrate integrity, trustworthiness, and sincerity. This loyalty extends to our relationships with Allah, our families, our friends, and our communities.
Loyalty to Allah entails fulfilling our religious obligations, such as performing the five daily prayers, observing fasting during Ramadan, paying Zakat, and undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca. It also involves adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and striving to please Allah in all aspects of our lives.
Loyalty to our families means fulfilling our responsibilities towards our parents, spouses, children, and relatives. It means being there for them in times of need, supporting and caring for them, and maintaining strong bonds of love and compassion. Loyalty to our friends and communities involves being trustworthy, supportive, and loyal in times of both ease and difficulty.
When we embody loyalty as nobility, we inspire others and create a positive impact on society. Our loyalty becomes a source of motivation and encouragement for others to fulfill their own commitments and obligations. It fosters a culture of trust, unity, and cooperation, which are essential for the well-being and progress of any community.
Conversely, the absence of loyalty can have detrimental consequences. It leads to broken promises, shattered trust, and the erosion of relationships. It breeds dishonesty, betrayal, and instability. When individuals and societies lack loyalty, they become fragmented, divided, and vulnerable to exploitation.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful saying reminds us of the importance of loyalty as a fundamental aspect of our faith. It serves as a guiding principle for our interactions with Allah and our fellow human beings. By embodying loyalty, we not only fulfill our obligations but also elevate our character and attain the noble status that Allah has bestowed upon us.
As Muslims, let us strive to be people of loyalty, upholding our commitments and obligations with sincerity and steadfastness. May we be guided by the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and may our loyalty be a source of nobility in this world and the hereafter.
