شَيْنُ العِلْمِ الصَّلَفُ۔
The disgrace of knowledge is boasting.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states: "شَيْنُ العِلْمِ الصَّلَفُ۔" which translates to
The disgrace of knowledge is boasting.
This beautiful Hadith highlights the negative aspect of knowledge when it is accompanied by arrogance and pride.
Let us delve into the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (shayn) "شَيْنُ" refers to disgrace, dishonor, or humiliation. It signifies the negative consequence that arises from a particular action or behavior. (al-'ilm) "العِلْمِ" means knowledge, which encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. Lastly, (as-salaf) "الصَّلَفُ" refers to boasting, showing off, or arrogance.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the perils of arrogance and pride in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah says,
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
This verse emphasizes the importance of humility and righteousness, as opposed to seeking superiority and causing corruption.
Another verse that sheds light on the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hadid (57:23), where Allah says,
So that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.
This verse cautions against being self-deluded and boastful, as it is displeasing to Allah. It reminds us to remain humble and grateful for the knowledge and blessings bestowed upon us.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to approach knowledge with humility and sincerity. It warns against using knowledge as a means of self-glorification or belittling others. Knowledge should be sought for the sake of benefiting oneself and others, not for personal gain or to elevate one's status.
When knowledge is accompanied by arrogance and boasting, it loses its true essence and becomes a source of disgrace. Such behavior not only tarnishes the individual's character but also undermines the purpose of acquiring knowledge. It creates division and animosity among people, hindering the spread of knowledge and the unity of the Muslim community.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the true spirit of humility and modesty. His knowledge was not a means to elevate himself above others but rather to guide and serve the Muslim community. He understood that true knowledge is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and it should be used to benefit humanity and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded to approach knowledge with a sincere intention and a humble heart. We should strive to acquire knowledge for the sake of Allah and seek to implement it in our lives, rather than using it as a tool for self-promotion. By doing so, we can avoid the disgrace that comes with arrogance and instead embody the true essence of knowledge - a means to draw closer to Allah and serve His creation.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in seeking knowledge with humility and sincerity, and protect us from the pitfalls of arrogance and pride. May we always strive to use our knowledge for the betterment of ourselves and society, and may we be blessed with the wisdom and understanding to do so.
