رُبَّ لَذَّة فيها الحِمامُ۔
Many a pleasure has death [hidden] in it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Pleasure And Delight)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
رُبَّ لَذَّة فيها الحِمامُ۔
This Hadith can be translated into English as,
Many a pleasure has death [hidden] in it.
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (ladhdhah) "لَذَّة" in Arabic refers to pleasure, delight, or enjoyment. It signifies a feeling of contentment and satisfaction. The word (al-himaam) "الحِمامُ" refers to death. It is important to note that the word "الحِمامُ" is derived from the root word (hamama) "هَمَمَ", which means to intend or to plan. Therefore, death is not merely an event but a planned and intentional occurrence.
The Quran provides us with several verses that shed light on the concept of death and its hidden pleasures. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:32),
And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason?
This verse reminds us that the pleasures and enjoyments of this worldly life are temporary and fleeting. They may bring temporary satisfaction, but they cannot compare to the eternal bliss and pleasure that await us in the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:45), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
This verse serves as a reminder that just as the rainwater nourishes the earth and brings forth vegetation, the pleasures of this world are temporary and will eventually wither away. The true pleasure lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah and preparing for the eternal life in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), being the gate of knowledge, understood the transient nature of worldly pleasures. He recognized that death, which may seem like an end, is actually a gateway to eternal bliss and pleasure. This Hadith serves as a reminder that death is not to be feared, but rather embraced as a means to attain the ultimate pleasure and closeness to Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to reflect upon the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and to prioritize the pursuit of the pleasure of Allah. By recognizing the true nature of this life and the inevitability of death, we can strive to live a life that is pleasing to Allah and prepare ourselves for the eternal pleasures of the Hereafter.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for us to constantly evaluate our actions and intentions. We should strive to align our intentions with the pleasure of Allah in every aspect of our lives. By doing so, we can ensure that even the simplest of pleasures in this world become a means of attaining closeness to Allah and preparing for the eternal pleasures of the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that death, which may appear as an end, holds within it hidden pleasures. It urges us to reflect upon the temporary nature of worldly pleasures and prioritize the pursuit of the pleasure of Allah. By doing so, we can transform even the simplest of pleasures into acts of worship and preparation for the eternal bliss of the Hereafter. May Allah guide us to live a life that is pleasing to Him and grant us the ultimate pleasure in the Hereafter.
