مِنَ النِّعَمِ اَلصَّدِيقُ الصَّدُوقُ۔
A truthful friend is one of the blessings [of Allah].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Blessing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مِنَ النِّعَمِ اَلصَّدِيقُ الصَّدُوقُ۔
This can be translated as,
A truthful friend is one of the blessings [of Allah].
Let us delve into the profound wisdom contained within this statement and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the important words in this Hadith. The word (sadiq) "صَدِيقُ" refers to a truthful and sincere friend, someone who is trustworthy and loyal. The word (sadooq) "صَدُوقُ" further emphasizes the truthfulness and authenticity of this friend. This Hadith highlights the immense value and significance of having such a friend in our lives.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthful companionship and warns against the company of those who are deceitful or untrustworthy. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah says, (Quran 18:28)
And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance. And let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring adornments of the worldly life, and do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance and who follows his desire and whose affair is ever [in] neglect.
This verse highlights the significance of surrounding ourselves with righteous and sincere individuals who remind us of Allah and strive for His pleasure. A truthful friend is one who encourages us towards goodness, reminds us of our duties, and helps us stay steadfast on the path of righteousness.
Furthermore, the Quran emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in various aspects of our lives. In Surah Al-Tawbah, Allah says, (Quran 9:119)
O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.
This verse encourages us to align ourselves with those who are truthful, as their company will have a positive influence on our character and actions.
Having a truthful friend not only brings blessings in this world but also in the hereafter. In Surah Al-Furqan, Allah describes the righteous servants as those who will be accompanied by their truthful friends on the Day of Judgment. Allah says, (Quran 25:27-29)
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way. Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one as a friend. He led me away from the remembrance after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter.'
This verse highlights the regret of those who followed the wrong path due to the influence of their deceitful companions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of choosing our friends wisely and seeking the company of those who will guide us towards the remembrance of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith emphasizes the immense value of a truthful friend in our lives. Such a friend is a blessing from Allah, as they provide support, guidance, and companionship on our journey towards righteousness. They remind us of our duties, encourage us to strive for excellence, and help us navigate the challenges of life with integrity and sincerity.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be truthful friends ourselves and seek the company of those who embody the qualities of truthfulness and sincerity. By doing so, we can cultivate an environment of righteousness and goodness, both in our personal lives and within our communities.
May Allah bless us with truthful friends and guide us to be truthful friends to others. Ameen.
