— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "أُصْدُقْ تُنْجِحْ۔" This can be translated into English as,

Be truthful and you will be successful.

This short but beautiful saying holds a deep meaning and provides guidance for Muslims in their daily lives.

Let us first examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (usduq) "أُصْدُقْ" means to be truthful, sincere, and honest in one's words and actions. It encompasses the idea of being genuine and trustworthy in all aspects of life. The word (tunjiḥ) "تُنْجِحْ" means to achieve success, prosperity, and fulfillment. It implies that by being truthful, one will attain true success in this life and the hereafter.

The importance of truthfulness is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-3),

Successful indeed are the believers, who are humble in their prayers, and who turn away from all that is vain, and who are active in giving Zakah.

This verse highlights the qualities of successful believers, and one of these qualities is truthfulness. By being truthful, we align ourselves with the characteristics of the successful believers mentioned in the Quran.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, the believers are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.

This verse emphasizes that the truthful believers are those who not only believe in Allah and His Messenger but also strive in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. This highlights the importance of truthfulness in our actions and our dedication to the path of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that being truthful is not only a moral virtue but also a means of achieving success in this world and the hereafter. When we are truthful, we gain the trust and respect of others, and this opens doors of opportunities for us. People are more likely to rely on and support those who are known for their honesty and integrity.

Moreover, being truthful in our interactions with others fosters healthy relationships and builds a strong community. It creates an environment of trust and sincerity, where people can rely on one another and work together towards common goals. This unity and cooperation are essential for the progress and success of any society.

In addition, being truthful with ourselves is equally important. It means being honest about our strengths and weaknesses, acknowledging our mistakes, and striving to improve ourselves. By facing the truth, we can identify areas for personal growth and take the necessary steps to become better individuals.

The consequences of truthfulness are not limited to this world alone. In the hereafter, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises great rewards for those who are truthful. In Surah Al-Ahzab (33:35), Allah says,

Indeed, the men who submit and the women who submit, the believing men and the believing women, the obedient men and the obedient women, the truthful men and the truthful women, the patient men and the patient women, the humble men and the humble women, the charitable men and the charitable women, the fasting men and the fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.

This verse highlights that truthfulness is among the qualities that lead to forgiveness and a great reward from Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

Be truthful and you will be successful

serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold the value of truthfulness in all aspects of their lives. By being truthful, we not only gain success in this world but also earn the pleasure of Allah and the rewards of the hereafter. Let us strive to be truthful in our words, actions, and intentions, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us success in this life and the hereafter.
