(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإحسان غنم" which translates to

Doing good [to others] is beneficial.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.

Let us first delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-ihsan) "الإحسان" refers to acts of kindness, benevolence, and excellence in one's actions towards others. It encompasses going above and beyond in fulfilling the rights of others and treating them with utmost respect and compassion. (ghaneem) "غنم" means "benefit" or "gain". It implies that engaging in acts of goodness brings about numerous advantages and rewards, both in this world and the hereafter.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of performing acts of goodness and kindness towards others. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195, Allah says,

And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse highlights that Allah Himself loves those who engage in acts of goodness.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that performing acts of kindness is not only a means of benefiting others but also a means of attaining personal growth and spiritual elevation. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah says,

And say, 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.''' Here, the concept of a

sound entrance and exit

refers to leading a life filled with righteous deeds and leaving this world with a good reputation. By engaging in acts of goodness, we not only benefit others but also strengthen our own character and attain Allah's support and guidance. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that acts of kindness and benevolence are not only virtuous but also bring about numerous benefits. When we treat others with kindness, we create an atmosphere of love, harmony, and unity within our communities. This fosters strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims, leading to a peaceful and prosperous society. Moreover, engaging in acts of goodness has a transformative effect on our own souls. It purifies our intentions, strengthens our faith, and brings us closer to Allah. By consistently practicing acts of kindness, we develop a compassionate and empathetic nature, which is a reflection of the noble qualities of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). The consequences of neglecting acts of goodness are also highlighted in the Quran. In Surah Al-Ma'un, verses 4-7, Allah warns those who neglect acts of kindness, saying,

So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer - those who make show [of their deeds] and withhold [simple] assistance." These verses serve as a reminder that performing acts of goodness is not limited to rituals alone; it encompasses all aspects of our lives, including our interactions with others.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the immense value and significance of performing acts of kindness and benevolence. By doing good to others, we not only benefit them but also elevate our own souls, strengthen our communities, and attain the pleasure of Allah. Let us strive to embody the teachings of this Hadith and make acts of goodness an integral part of our lives, for it is through such actions that we can truly fulfill our purpose as Muslims and strive for excellence in all that we do. May Allah grant us the ability to practice acts of goodness and benefit from their rewards.
