اَلعُسْرُ يَشينُ الأخْلاقَ، وَيُوحِشُ الرِّفاقَ۔
Adversity degrades morals and alienates friends.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Adversity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Adversity degrades morals and alienates friends.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and highlights the negative consequences of facing hardships. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (usur) "عُسْر" in the Hadith refers to adversity, difficulty, or hardship. It encompasses various challenges that individuals may face in their lives, such as financial struggles, health issues, emotional turmoil, or any other form of distress. This word emphasizes the negative impact that such difficulties can have on a person's character and behavior.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:155)
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient
This verse highlights the inevitability of facing hardships in life and emphasizes the importance of patience during these trials.
When individuals encounter adversity, it often becomes a test of their character and resilience. The Hadith warns that such challenges can degrade a person's morals. For example, financial difficulties may lead someone to resort to dishonest means of earning money, compromising their integrity. Similarly, the emotional strain of a hardship can cause individuals to become irritable, impatient, or even engage in harmful behavior towards others.
To further emphasize the impact of adversity on character, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Ma'idah, (Quran 5:82)
And you will surely find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, 'We are Christians.' That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant
This verse highlights the importance of humility and kindness, even in the face of adversity.
Moreover, the Hadith also mentions that adversity alienates friends. When individuals go through difficult times, they often require support and understanding from their loved ones. However, the strain of adversity can sometimes cause a rift between friends and loved ones. This can occur due to a lack of empathy, misunderstandings, or even the burden of the hardship itself.
In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us, (Quran 8:46)
And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient
This verse emphasizes the importance of unity and avoiding disputes during challenging times. It reminds Muslims to support and stand by one another, rather than allowing adversity to divide them.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can see that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides us with valuable insight into the consequences of facing hardships. Adversity has the potential to degrade a person's morals and alienate their friends. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to maintain their integrity, patience, and unity during difficult times. By doing so, they can navigate through adversity with grace and emerge stronger in their faith and character.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome the challenges we face, and may He unite us as a community during times of hardship. Ameen.
