(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hopes And Aspirations)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الأملُ رَفيقٌ مُونِسٌ۔" This can be translated as,
Hope is an intimate companion.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (amal) "أمل" refers to hope or aspiration. It is the feeling of expectation and desire for something to happen. It is the belief that something good will occur in the future. Hope is a powerful emotion that drives us to persevere, to strive for success, and to maintain a positive outlook in the face of challenges.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes hope as (rafiqun munis) "رَفيقٌ مُونِسٌ", which can be translated as an intimate companion. This description highlights the close relationship between hope and the human soul. Just as a companion accompanies us in our journey through life, hope accompanies us in our pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. It is a constant source of solace and encouragement, providing us with the strength to overcome difficulties and persevere in the face of adversity.
The Quranic verses beautifully emphasize the significance of hope in the life of a Muslim. In Surah Yusuf (12:87), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.
This verse reminds us that as Muslims, we should never lose hope in the mercy and assistance of Allah. Despair is a characteristic of those who reject faith, while hope is a defining quality of believers.
Furthermore, in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us,
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
This verse reminds us that no matter how grave our sins may be, we should never lose hope in the forgiveness and mercy of Allah. Hope is a means of seeking redemption and drawing closer to our Creator.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact that hope can have on our lives. When we have hope, we are motivated to strive for success, to work towards our goals, and to overcome obstacles. Hope gives us the strength to persevere in the face of challenges, knowing that Allah's mercy and assistance are always within reach.
Hope also has a transformative effect on our mindset and attitude. It allows us to maintain a positive outlook, even in the darkest of times. It helps us to see opportunities where others see only difficulties. When faced with setbacks or failures, hope encourages us to learn from our experiences and to keep moving forward.
Moreover, hope has a ripple effect on our relationships and interactions with others. When we are hopeful, we radiate positivity and inspire those around us. Our hope becomes contagious, uplifting the spirits of those who may be struggling. It fosters a sense of unity and support within the Muslim community, as we come together to share our hopes and dreams, and to support one another in their pursuit.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that hope is not merely a fleeting emotion, but rather an intimate companion that accompanies us throughout our lives. It is a source of strength, motivation, and positivity. By nurturing hope within ourselves and encouraging it in others, we can create a more resilient and united Muslim community. Let us hold onto hope, for it is through hope that we find solace, inspiration, and the ultimate fulfillment of our aspirations. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us unwavering hope and guide us on the path of righteousness.
