— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Neglect)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic phrase in the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is "ضادُّوا التفْريطَ بِالحَزْمِ". Let us delve into the meaning of this phrase and its implications in light of the Quran.

The word (tafreet) "تفْريط" refers to neglect or carelessness. It signifies the act of being lax, indifferent, or negligent in fulfilling one's responsibilities or duties. On the other hand, (al-hazm) "الحَزْم" means judiciousness or resoluteness. It denotes the quality of being firm, determined, and decisive in one's actions.

To understand the significance of countering neglect with judiciousness, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran, verse 200:

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of perseverance and steadfastness in the face of challenges and trials. It encourages Muslims to remain resolute and determined in upholding their faith and fulfilling their obligations. Neglecting these responsibilities can lead to spiritual decline and a weakening of one's relationship with Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 15, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Indeed, the believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.

This verse highlights the importance of taking decisive action and being proactive in fulfilling our duties as Muslims. It reminds us that true believers are those who not only have faith but also actively strive and make sacrifices for the sake of Allah. Neglecting our responsibilities and being indifferent towards our obligations can undermine our sincerity and commitment to the path of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith urges us to counter neglect with judiciousness. It calls upon us to be vigilant and proactive in fulfilling our duties as Muslims. Neglecting our obligations can have detrimental consequences on both our individual and collective spiritual growth.

For example, neglecting our prayers, which are one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, can lead to a weakened connection with Allah and a decline in our spirituality. Similarly, neglecting our responsibilities towards our families, communities, and society can result in a breakdown of trust and harmony.

By countering neglect with judiciousness, we can ensure that we remain steadfast in our faith and fulfill our obligations with sincerity and dedication. This requires us to be proactive, disciplined, and determined in our actions. We should strive to establish a balance between our worldly responsibilities and our spiritual obligations, ensuring that we do not neglect either aspect of our lives.

In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of countering neglect with judiciousness. It urges us to be vigilant and proactive in fulfilling our duties as Muslims, both in our worship and in our interactions with others. By doing so, we can strive for spiritual growth and contribute positively to our communities and society as a whole. May Allah guide us all to be steadfast and resolute in our actions and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
