سَبَبُ السِّيادَةِ السَّخاءُ۔
The cause of ascendancy is generosity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "سَبَبُ السِّيادَةِ السَّخاءُ۔" This translates to
The cause of ascendancy is generosity.
In this impactful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of generosity as a means to attain power and authority.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "سَبَبُ" refers to the cause or reason behind something, while "السِّيادَةِ" denotes ascendancy, dominance, or leadership. Lastly, "السَّخاءُ" signifies generosity, which encompasses acts of giving, kindness, and selflessness.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of generosity and its role in attaining success and leadership. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This ayah highlights the concept of spending in the way of Allah, which encompasses acts of generosity. Just as a seed grows into a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously brings forth abundant blessings and rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This generosity not only benefits the recipient but also elevates the status and influence of the giver.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the righteous believers by saying,
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'
This verse exemplifies the selflessness and sincerity of those who give generously. They provide sustenance to those in need solely for the sake of pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without expecting any worldly gain or appreciation. Such acts of generosity not only demonstrate compassion but also establish a sense of authority and influence, as they reflect the noble character and values of the giver.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes that generosity is not merely an act of charity, but a means to attain ascendancy and leadership. When a person consistently demonstrates generosity, they gain the respect and admiration of others. Their selfless actions inspire others to follow their example, and they become natural leaders within their communities.
Generosity has the power to motivate and unite people towards a common cause. When leaders exhibit generosity, they create an environment of trust, compassion, and cooperation. This fosters a sense of loyalty and devotion among their followers, enabling them to work together towards shared goals and aspirations.
Moreover, generosity has a ripple effect that extends beyond immediate material benefits. When individuals witness acts of generosity, they are inspired to emulate such behavior, creating a cycle of giving and compassion. This not only strengthens the bonds of society but also contributes to the overall well-being and prosperity of the community.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the profound relationship between generosity and ascendancy. By embodying the spirit of generosity, individuals can attain leadership and influence in their communities. This concept is supported by various Quranic verses that emphasize the virtues and rewards of generosity. As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to cultivate a spirit of generosity and selflessness, not only for the betterment of our own souls but also for the betterment of society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be generous and compassionate, and may He bless us with true leadership and ascendancy.
