Hadith #4747

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "سَبَبُ السِّيادَةِ السَّخاءُ۔" This translates to

The cause of ascendancy is generosity.

In this impactful Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of generosity as a means to attain power and authority.

To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "سَبَبُ" refers to the cause or reason behind something, while "السِّيادَةِ" denotes ascendancy, dominance, or leadership. The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This ayah highlights the concept of spending in the way of Allah, which encompasses acts of generosity. Just as a seed grows into a bountiful harvest, the act of giving generously brings forth abundant blessings and rewards from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Furthermore, in Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the righteous believers by saying,

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

This verse exemplifies the selflessness and sincerity of those who give generously. They provide sustenance to those in need solely for the sake of pleasing Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), without expecting any worldly gain or appreciation.
